A.K.A. "I get overly ambitious and ask too much out of a handful of pens and some cardboard."Taking another break from my characters to draw some fanart, but I decided to stray from the usual Yoshi fare in favor of something Star Fox-related. Granted, Star Fox Adventures was barely a Star Fox game at all and Krystal was barely in it despite the boxart proudly having her standing right next to Fox, but it was still a fun game if not a bit silly at times and a little rushed near the end.
So, Krystal... this is someone who's never really had much in the way of character development, but I also believe what little characterization is present shows a lot of potential. Namco toyed around with her a little in Star Fox Assault via the whole "team telepath" thing, and while I feel that it was a step in the right direction, they didn't go far enough with her or her powers. A real shame, that. As for Nintendo... they never were able to figure out what to do with her, and it seems like they keep trying to avoid confronting the blue vixen in the room, given how the past few Star Fox-related games they've released have been a portable remake of Star Fox 64 , a console reboot heavily based around Star Fox 64 , and... a SNES game that I never thought would ever officially see the light of day .
At least she got into Smash Ultimate as an assist trophy. And she's got her staff, too! Always wondered what happened to that thing? It just sort of vanished without a trace after Adventures, didn't it?
...
I decided since winter was here, I was going to try and draw something with a largely cool color scheme, compared to the warm and mixed color setups that a lot of these trash drawings have exhibited. That means lots of of blues and greens and maybe a little bit of purples, too! Also, snow! Because winter! And because I like snow! Admittedly, while I always intended for the mountains to be snow-capped, the snow on the ground and the pine trees was more of a last-minute thing. Also, I wanted to see if I could pull off drawing snow-covered pine trees. I like pine trees.
Figured I'd try and do a night scene this time, since those aren't a thing I do very often. Have a lot of mixed feelings about the sky itself, however... the moon itself and the light reflecting off of it aren't too bad (probably should've used cyan for the moon instead of yellow, though), but I really messed up on those clouds. Past few times I tried clouds, they came out okay, but I really should've used less blue and more purple... and maybe more black, too. Maybe next time I'll get it right.
When I was drawing Krystal, I decided I was going to try and draw the original design from memory despite not wholly remembering how it looked. As these "Trash Drawings" are all done during my day job, I don't really have the luxury of looking up references whenever I deem it necessary, so I sort of took it as a challenge. I got... most of it right, which is honestly kind of impressive, considering I always much preferred her design in Assault. The only part that really bothers me would be her top; I knew when drawing this that it was supposed to be a light brown/tan color, which would be noticeably darker than usual due to it being a night scene, but there was one problem: I don't have a brown pen. I've collected several pens on the job to use for these drawings, but I still have yet to find one with brown ink... maybe I should just give in and buy my own? I figured I could try using the colors I do have on hand to act as a substitute - I do that whenever I need orange, after all, and brown is indeed a variation of the color orange. It... didn't work so well here. I mean, it's still presentable, but...
On a side note, this is the third time I've ever drawn this character. The first time was this hideous sketch I made waaay back in 2009, while the second was this significantly more presentable digital bust shot done five years later in 2014 . It's nice to look back and see how far you've come, isn't it?
...
While I am overall pretty disappointed with how the drawing came out, I can at least say I've gotten to be fairly good at drawing pine trees. It's a small detail, but I was especially proud of myself for being able to draw the bits on snow on the ones in the foreground. But what do you all think? Feel free to let me know in the comments below!
Krystal is property of Nintendo.
...
Part of my "Trash Drawing" series, which are a collection of pen-on-cardboard sketches that I did during the quieter moments of my day job. Due to the crude materials used, the sometimes rushed nature, and the fact these are drawn on literal pieces of garbage (cardboard scraps), I have taken to calling these "Trash Drawings." I might start calling them something else in the future, however, as the drawings in question have gradually grown more elaborate and colorful as the series progressed.

I appreciate the glow you put in the clouds from the moon! Also, the yellow coloring for the moon seems to balance the picture a bit more. If cyan was used, it might have melded into the background a bit too much, unless that's what you were going for. Then again, I'm always up for high contrast drawings now a days. XD
I've never played Assault or Adventures, which would explain why I didn't know who Krystal was. Before seeing the title to this, I thought that this was Kat for some reason. Probably because I grew up with Star Fox 64. But I'm pretty sure she's more of a lilac...I'm super disappointed with how the Star Fox franchise is being treated by Nintendo. They have such a good game concept, but they're trying new things out with it that..just don't work. I was so pumped for Star Fox Zero, but then they forced the gyro controls down your throat that it nearly ruined the experience for me.

I kinda did want everything to mesh a bit, as that's usually how night skies tend to work. A cyan moon probably wouldn't have fixed the clouds, but it would've helped with the cool color scheme I had going on. My real issue is the clouds; they just stick out too much and don't look natural. A shame since I thought the last few drawings I did with clouds came out pretty decent. I'll need to keep that in mind next time I do a night scene...
A little surprised you're not familiar with the character Krystal. When it comes to Star Fox fan art, she's a fairly popular choice, had viewable trophies in some of the Smash Bros. games and Smash Ultimate even has her as an assist trophy (thus the title), but... then again, she has been conspicuously absent from the past few games (last SF game to feature her was 2006's Command, a game most fans don't like to talk about). Star Fox fans, however, are a bit divided on her placement in the series; some think she's fine, while others seem to think she represents everything wrong with the series. It's a topic worthy of it's own discussion, to be honest. That said, I probably should try my hand at one of the other characters (such as Fox or Falco)... I could stand to draw more manly characters, after all (Melee barely counts).
You admittedly didn't miss a great deal during the GameCube era; Adventures was a pretty decent Zelda clone, but as a Star Fox game? Er... not so much. The Star Fox elements that are present were very tacked on and were honestly really dull. Assault was also a decent game, and while it has its moments, it's nothing special; Arwing sections felt sluggish and on-foot sections would drag on as you're constantly tasked with having to seek and destroy all of the shield generators/aparoid hatchers/etc. Ironic, considering the game itself is a little on the short side. It had good ideas, but the execution left a fair bit to be desired. Haven't played Zero myself, so I can't properly judge it, though I do know a lot of people weren't keen on that control setup.

I can see what you mean with the clouds, there's a heavy contrast between the light blue and dark purple. But that seems to be a natural occurrence with dark clouds. Perhaps they need a slight more gradient to them? Also, the cloud in front of the moon only has lighting on one side of it. It would look a little more natural if the light was around the perimeter of it.
I'm sure I've seen her as a trophy in Smash, but as an in game character, I've never seen her. What exactly about her would people think that she's everything wrong with the series? Was she introduced around the time that the series started veering away from a 3d shmup? Also, it'd be awesome to see some more characters! I'd have to say Falco and Wolf are my favorite characters from the Star Fox series.
Adventure is a Zelda clone? Hm, I might need to actually look into that. I've been looking for a Zelda clone as of late, even if its a half baked one. I started Earthbound recently, but the turn based RPG element is rough for me to play through. Not saying Earthbound is a Zelda clone, but that's just where I'm at with gaming right now.

I'm not used to drawing clouds in the night sky, but I do agree that clouds should've had more of a gradient to them. And you're right about the one in front of the moon; should've made the lighting wrap around more of it... well, at least I have a better idea of what to do for next time.
There's a few reasons why some fans don't like her (her being introduced when Nintendo decided to try different things with the series is one of them), but I think the most compelling one is that they like didn't how she was made into Fox's love interest following Adventures. The relationship always felt kind of arbitrary and clumsily-handled; the two never really show any romantic chemistry outside of maybe one short cutscene in Assault. Alternatively, they could also just hate her being paired with Fox because it interferes with their own personal shipping fantasies (as if that's going to stop people from drawing or writing about it...). If she was only in Adventures, they'd probably overlook her (especially since she's not present for 95% of the game), but the fact she stuck around for awhile after that and became a team member rubbed them the wrong way.
Myself? I strongly feel the groundwork for the character and what we have been shown has a lot of unrealized potential and that she just needs some real character development, but Nintendo annoyingly never showed much interest in doing that.
Yes, Adventures is a Zelda clone, albeit nowhere near as deep as the games in that series. It's actually pretty simple in comparison to Zelda, but it's still a decent game in it's own right (just not a good fit for the Star Fox series). Personally, if you're really looking to scratch that Zelda itch, I'd recommend the first Darksiders game; it's basically a Zelda game with God of War-style combat, with puzzles and dungeon layouts that would make Nintendo proud. If you can look past the dark and edgy art direction, it's actually a pretty good game that I'd wholly recommend and I think it's a real shame the sequels didn't follow suit.

Maybe practice a bit with lighting on clouds for a time, that could definitely help. Do different directions of light sources around them and play around with it.
Ooooh, okay, I can totally see why that wouldn't sit well with people. From the sounds of it, it seems like she was just stuck there to fill the role for someone else's character (hence Fox's love interest), rather than be a character of her own. Her role was just fabricated for Fox, not for her own sake. I have to admit, that's a pet peeve of mine with writers, its just plain lazy writing. It has nothing to do with the character itself, its just how the character is being handled. Like you said, there's a crap ton of unrealized potential, because she's being written for Fox and the crew, rather than being written for herself.
So Adventures is almost like Okami in terms of content, I'm assuming. I will need to look into it then. Also, I'll be sure to check out Darksiders too! Thanks for the recommendations~
