Description
The moon shone bright in the sky and the stars glittered in the night. The wind blew by the border of ThunderClan and WindClan, the scent of rabbits stretched across the WindClan border. A pair of amber eyes looked into the moorlands on WindClan. There was no sign of any WindClan cats and all the ThunderClan cats were fast asleep in their dens. The light brown tabby slowly walked over to the stream that came from the Moonpool. The she-cat looked down into the water and sighed. She saw her reflection in the water, but, she could barely recognize herself. She could see the reflection of the night sky in the water and silver fish under the stream. She closed her eyes for a moment, remembering how she would come here every other night to meet with the one cat she truly loved, they cat she still loved, the cat she lost to another.Memories flooded through the young cat’s mind. Memories of a handsome grey tom meeting her by the stream, of them running away to be together, of them coming back only to find a grey she-cat laying in the nursery, her pelt covered in blood from the attack of a badger, ending her life before it should have ended. She slowly opened her eyes and she looked into the water again. She saw a dark grey tom’s face on the other side of the stream. “Leafpool?” The she-cat almost jumped backwards, but she was able to control herself. She looked up to see the face of the WindClan tom. “C-Crowfeather…” She stammered, unable to speak.
“Leafpool, what are you doing here?” He growled. Leafpool heart sank when she heard his voice, angry with her. She stood up straight, trying to hide her sorrow from the WindClan cat. “There is no problem with me being here. I’m on my side of the territory and you are on your side.” She looked at Crowfeather. He saw his pelt prickle slightly, but, she could see the same sorrow and pain that she felt in his blue eyes. “You shouldn’t be this close to the border.” He meowed curtly. Leafpool looked away from him. “Like I said before, as long as we stay on our territories, we aren’t breaking the warrior code.” Leafpool kept her amber gaze off of Crowfeather. She couldn’t bare look at his sad, blue eyes.
“It is still dangerous.” His voice sounded closer than before. Leafpool brought up the strength to look back over at him and her pelt prickled when she saw the top wading through the stream to come to her. “Crowfeather, what are you doing?” She hissed quietly, hoping that none of her clanmates or any of his clanmates were out for a little night hunting. “This stream belongs to WindClan, remember, so, technically, I am still on my territory.” Leafpool watched him as he came across the stream and he stopped at the edge of ThunderClan territory.
“You shouldn’t be this close to the border.” She said, but Crowfeather ignored her. He slowly lifted himself up on the edge of the stream and he stood inches away from Leafpool’s face. “Now my paws are on ThunderClan territory.” He said before he touched his nose to Leafpool’s nose. Leafpool wanted to pull away, knocking this would only bring more pain to herself and for Crowfeather, but she couldn’t help but breath in the WindClan’s cat’s scent and she slowly let her tail drift to the water. Crowfeather lifted his tail out of the water and their two tails tangled with each others.
They stood there for a few moments, but, Leafpool wished that this moment would last forever, so she would never have to leave his side again. Crowfeather pulled away from her, she felt sorrow sweep over her. “You shouldn’t have done that.” She whispered quietly. “But I wanted, too. You can punish me if you want.” Crowfeather whispered back to her. Leafpool looked into his blue eyes and then she closed them when she felt her eyes begin to water. She untangled her tail from his and took a step back. “Crowfeather, I-I can’t.” She said quietly. “Leafpool, please…” Crowfeather pleaded, but Leafpool stopped him. “No, Crowfeather. What about Nightcloud?” She meowed, her voice full of pain. Leafpool glanced up at Crowfeather as he lowered his head. “Nightcloud isn’t really my mate, Leafpool.” Leafpool was taken back from what Crowfeather said. Her eyes were wide with surprise. Leafpool found it hard to speak, but she was able to find words to say. “But, I thought she was the mother of your kits?” Crowfeather shook his head. “No, she isn’t the mother of my kits. Swiftpelt is the real father, but, he died a few days after we returned to the clans. Nightcloud only said that so that the clan would get off my back and think that I have chosen a mate from my clan. I know that she loves me, but, I don’t love her.” Crowfeather meowed.
Leafpool couldn’t find any more words to use. Crowfeather had lied to his whole clan about having a mate and kits when it wasn’t really true. What would happen if they found out he was lying. That would be the second lie he had told his clan. Would they let him stay after that? Leafpool felt pain rush over her as she thought about kits. She closed her eyes to hide her pain once more. “I am sorry I said that the other day, but, I knew it would be the only way to show your clan that I was over you, which I am not. I still love you Leafpool and I always will.” Leafpool felt Crowfeather press his dark grey fur against hers. “Now, tell me what you wanted to tell me the other day.” He whispered in her ear. Leafpool kept her eyes closed and she stood quite for many moments. Crowfeather never moved from her side as the she-cat tried to find the right words to speak with. She took in a deep breath before she finally spoke again. “Let’s just say…” She paused. “…that you are a father, but not of Nightcloud’s kits.” Crowfeather stood silent for a few seconds before replying. “What do you mean?” He asked, but Leafpool could tell by the sound of his voice that he already knew what she meant. She opened her eyes and looked up into Crowfeather’s.
“You are the father of my kits, Crowfeather.” She dug her claws into the soft earth and she braced herself for Crowfeather’s rage and rejection. How could he stay near me now that he knows he is the father of the kits who belong to a medicine cat? She thought as tears welded up in her eyes at the thought of Crowfeather rejecting her. Crowfeather stood silent, his face gave nothing away. Leafpool was thinking that he was just trying to find some way to let her down easily. Crowfeather lowered his head and rested it on top of the ThunderClan medicine cat’s head. “Is that what you wanted to tell me? That you’re a queen?” He sounded very calm after just hearing Leafpool’s news. Leafpool was shocked her didn’t go running off back to WindClan territory. “Y-yes.” She stammered.
“I see. Does anyone else know?” He asked, still calm. “Only Squirrelflight. The clan thinks she’s a queen and is going to have Brambleclaw’s kits. She said that she would mother my kits so the clan doesn’t find out.” Leafpool explained. He chuckled slightly. “I thought you would tell her. You two tell each other everything. Well, everything but one thing…” He trailed off. Leafpool slowly pulled away from Crowfeather and she looked up at him. “You are not made at me?” She was still wondering how he could stand to be near. “Why would I be?” Crowfeather asked. “I mean, you don’t regret that you saved me that day from falling off the cliff? You’re the father of a medicine cat’s kits. How can you not hate me?”
Crowfeather’s eyes burned with fury. “I can never regret for saving you, Leafpool! I don’t see how you could think that!” He growled and his dark fur prickled. Leafpool was taken back, but, not by his anger, by the fact that he loved her enough to father her kits. “I will never hate you, Leafpool, never!” Leafpool felt tears rushed down her cheeks and she buried her face into Crowfeather’s fur. “Oh, Crowfeather! I love you, too!” She sobbed and Crowfeather wrapped his tail around her and licked her ear. “It’s okay, I’m here.” He whispered.
“That’s the thing. You won’t always be here.” Leafpool cried softly, keeping her face buried into his fur. “Why? I thought we were going to run away together?” Crowfeather didn’t seem to understand her. “Crowfeather, Cinderpelt is still dead. I can’t run away with you this time. I have to stay in ThunderClan.” Crowfeather slowly pulled away from the tabby she-cat and he looked at the ground. “I’m sorry, Crowfeather. You don’t know how much I want to run away with you, but, my place is here, with my clan.”
Crowfeather didn’t response to Leafpool. Leafpool looked at him. She knew that his heart must be crushed into a million pieces right now, just like hers. She hated that she had to do this; that she had to get Crowfeather out of her life. “No, Leafpool, we will run away together. “ “But…” Crowfeather lifted his tail to her mouth and cut her off. “But, not yet. You’re right. You can’t leave ThunderClan without a medicine cat, but, please, promise this, Leafpool.”
“Promise me that you won’t fall for anyone else and that when you get an apprentice and he or she is fully trained, that you will run away with me.” Crowfeather starred into Leafpool’s amber eyes. They glittered like the stars in the night sky. Crowfeather lowered his tail to hear what she would say. Leafpool took a few steps forward and she touched noses with Crowfeather. “I promise.” She whispered. A soft smile spread across Crowfeather’s face. “Thank you.” He said.
Leafpool took a step back from him. “But, you have to promise me something. Promise you won’t fall for Nightcloud or any other she-cat. And as long as I don’t have someone to take over till I leave, we can’t be together. From now on, we are no longer mates, not until the day I know that my apprentice is ready.” Leafpool meowed, but it pained her to say these words. Crowfeather sighed. “Yes, I promise you this.” He said and he touched noses with her one last time. “I love you, Leafpool.” “I love you, too, Crowfeather.”
With that, Crowfeather pulled away and turned around. He walked back over to the stream and waded through. When he climbed back on to the other side into WindClan territory, he dashed off with the speed of a LeopardClan warrior. Leafpool watched him until he came to the last hill that she could see. He stopped for one moment and looked back at her. Leafpool felt tears rush down her face. One day, we won’t have borders to stop us. One day, we can be together forever. One day, we will never leave each other’s side. She thought as Crowfeather disappeared from her sight.
The sky was dark and the clouds covered the moon in the sky. The scent of blood swept over the forest. By the border of ThunderClan and WindClan, three cats stood at the edge of the border, look down into the river. The body of a large cat laid at the edge of ThunderClan, territory, his head and upper body laid on the blood stained floor and his lower part of his body stood in the water. His yellow eyes were still open, blazing with fury and pain. His golden fur was covered in blood and his mouth was open from his last yowl before he was killed.
Lionblaze growled and turned away from the LionClan cat’s body. Hollyleaf sighed and followed her brother, leaving Jayfeather alone to stare at the body of Sol. He wasn’t asleep and he wasn’t having a vision. Everything that was happening in front of him was real, and he could see it. Jayfeather slowly stepped forward and he pulled something out from under Sol’s large paw. He placed the stick on the ground and looked at its markings, still unharmed by Sol’s large claws. Jayfeather let out a sigh of relief and he carried the stick over to a tree and hid it under its roots. He would return it to the lake another day.
Jayfeather looked down at the stick before he head Hollyleaf’s call. “Jayfeather! Quick, come here!” The grey tom looked over his shoulder and quickly ran towards his brother and sister. He stopped a few tail lengths behind them. “What is it?” He asked when his brother and sister came into view. Hollyleaf was looking down at something and Lionblaze was looking over his shoulder, looking at Jayfeather. Jayfeather could see pain the young warrior’s eyes and he could also feel sorrow coming from both of the cats.
Jayfeather rushed over and stood between Lionblaze and Hollyleaf to see what had happened. His blue eyes went wide when he saw what they were talking about. “No.” He whispered. A tabby she-cat’s body laid on the floor, badly hurt and badly bleeding. Her amber eyes were closed and her chest didn’t seem to be moving. “Leafpool!” Jayfeather cried and he quickly crouched beside his mentor’s body. “Leafpool!” Jayfeather buried his nose into her bloody fur.
For the first time in his life, Jayfeather saw Leafpool with his eyes while he was awake, but, he for once in his life, he wanted to be blind, to not be able to see his dying mentor. “Leafpool, no, please don’t go.” Jayfeather cried. He could hear faint sobs coming from Hollyleaf and he could feel grief coming from Lionblaze. Jayfeather slowly lifted his head to look at his mentor’s face. Oh, Leafpool. Please, please don’t leave me. He prayed. “I will never leave you, Jayfeather.” Jayfeather’s ears pricked when he saw Leafpool slowly opening her eyes.
She lifted her head to look at the three young cats. “I could never leave any of you.” She meowed softly. “Leafpool! Leafpool, we can help you. Hang on Leafpool, we’ll get help!” Lionblaze meowed quickly when he saw the medicine cat lift her head. Leafpool slowly shook her head. “No, young one. I cannot be helped. My time here is done; I’m am going to join StarClan here and now.” “B-but Leafpool, what about the clan?” Hollyleaf was barely able to find her voice. “Jayfeather will be the medicine cat. I know he is ready.” She whispered.
“Please, Leafpool, you can’t really leave.” Jayfeather begged the light brown tabby. She smiled softly and she placed her tail tip on his shoulder. “My dear son…” Jayfeather’s ears pricked when he heard her speak. Son? “Don’t you already know I can never leave you? From the time you three were born, I was always watching over you. Don’t you know the truth by now?” Jayfeather stood quite. “What do you mean, Leafpool?” Lionblaze asked quietly. Leafpool closed her eyes for a moment and then looked up at the sky.
“There will be three, kin of your kin, who will hold the power of the stars in their paws. You three are the kin of Firestar’s, but, not through Squirrelflight. You don’t have powers because you of the grandchildren of Firestar and Tigerstar. You three are my kits. This is the reason why you are blind, Jayfeather.” Leafpool looked at the gray tom. “Please forgive me.” Jayfeather felt pain rush over him, but, he didn’t seem surprise to find out Leafpool was his mother. Deep down, Jayfeather knew it all along.
He could feel a bit of shock coming from Lionblaze and Hollyleaf, but, they were only worried about if Leafpool would live or not. Jayfeather stretched his neck forward and he touched Leafpool’s forehead. “No, it is not because of you I am blind. I was born blind because of my powers. You had nothing to do with my blindness, Leafpool.” He meowed, despite that he could see he wasn’t sure if his sight would last forever. Jayfeather heard Leafpool purr quietly. She licked his shoulder.
Jayfeather looked at Leafpool as she slowly laid her head back on the ground. Her eyes glittered like the stars of StarClan. “Crowfeather, you’ve come for me.” She whispered before closing her eyes for the last time. “No!” Jayfeather heard Hollyleaf whisper. Jayfeather slowly stood up and glanced back at Lionblaze and Hollyleaf. The black she-cat face was buried into the golden tabby’s fur. Lionblaze tried to comfort his sister as best he could. Jayfeather felt tears fall down his checks.
The young cats stood by the body of their dead mother for only a few moments, but, those few moments felt like many seasons before Jayfeather finally turned to his siblings. “We should take her back to camp. They will want to grieve for her.” He whispered quietly. Lionblaze nodded and he licked Hollyleaf’s ear. “We must go.” He told her softly. Hollyleaf moved away from Lionblaze and she walked over to Leafpool’s body. Jayfeather bent down to pick up Leafpool by her scruff, but then he heard a voice. “Do not grieve long my kits.” Jayfeather looked up and his eyes went wide.
“I will always be with you all.” It was Leafpool. Her light brown pelt glittered like the stars in the sky. “We both will be with you.” A new voice said and Crowfeather’s spirit appeared beside his mate. “L-Leafpool…” Hollyleaf stammered. Jayfeather could feel shock rushing through his brother and sister’s pelts. “How?” Lionblaze whispered. Jayfeather stood silent, unable to find words to speak with. Leafpool smiled and her amber gaze rested on her grey son.
“Oh, my dear son, you have been contacted by StarClan many times, and yet, you are shocked to see your father and I right in front of you.” Crowfeather glanced at Lionblaze and Hollyleaf. “You two have also seen StarClan spirits before. Do not be so shocked!” He growled, but his eyes were full of compassion. “You three have fulfilled you destiny, but your lives will go on through ThunderClan.” Crowfeather meowed, softer this time and he walked over to Lionblaze. He touched his nose to Lionblaze’s forehead. “You have grown strong my son and you shall be the greatest fighter the clans have ever seen.”
Leafpool smiled before turning and walking over to Hollyleaf. She rested her head on top of the black she-cat’s forehead. “You are dedicated to the warrior code, despite your father’s love for me and my love for him. You shall make a great leader one day. I know it.” Jayfeather glanced at their brother and sister. He saw Crowfeather and Leafpool’s eyes glow slightly while Lionblaze and Hollyleaf’s eyes closed. Crowfeather stepped away from Lionblaze turned to Jayfeather. He rested his tail tip on the medicine cat’s shoulder and Leafpool pressed her pelt against Jayfeather’s.
“You are a great medicine cat and you shall help heal your clan for many moons.” Crowfeather meowed. “You are very intelligent and will be able to find the answer to any problem that you may encounter.” Leafpool purred. Jayfeather closed his eyes and accepted the love from his parents. He then heard Leafpool’s voice in his head. “Jayfeather, you must listen. Hollyleaf and Lionblaze have fulfilled their destiny, but, you still have a destiny you must fulfill. You must not tell you siblings, it is only for you to know, but do not worry my son. You can do it.” Jayfeather opened his eyes and looked into Leafpool’s eyes.
Leafpool’s eyes glimmered before the she-cat faded away. Jayfeather looked at his father as he faded away as well. “Remember, we will always be with you.” The voices of Leafpool and Crowfeather sounded out through the forest. Jayfeather looked up at the sky, as well as Lionblaze and Hollyleaf. The three siblings did not move from their spot, watching the starry sky. Leafpool’s voice rang in Jayfeather’s head. Remember, we will always be with you. Jayfeather closed his eyes. I know, mother.
