A few years ago I started this fan-made manga about DDLC where (big surprise) the protagonist Stephen Dante is isekai'ed in the Artificial World of DDLC.
I had many ideas to make this somewhat cliché plot into an interesting slice-of-life/mystery/drama story, but I got lost in making the most significant portions of the story.
I still come back to it once in a while, but I don't post much lately.
*DESCRIPTION:
I guess most of you are wondering why I've drawn this page so detailed compared to the other ones from the gallery (i'm not talking about the drafts)
Well the thing is, this story (if I ever focused on it properly) was meant to be drawn more and more detailed, as Stephen was adjusting to the world
The more the protagonist of the story feels the world becomes more real, the more the artwork becomes more detailed.
*CONTEXT:
The purpose of this page, expressed in a sarcastic manner by the characters, is to enhance subtly the title "Reverting" which means:
- to return to a former habit, practice, belief, condition, etc.
And this meaning, of course, surrounds Stephen's character.
Throughout this story, I've been focusing on a very important aspect of his personality, that enhances his empathy and careness towards these characters of DDLC - his loneliness.

But despite coming to terms with his new environment, something makes him feel abnormal. Like he can push past the boundaries while exploring his hell.
His journey first starts confident, like a visitor exploring the unknown.

But this is only a pretence, making him more vulnerable when catching relatable glimpses of his former self in the characters he knows he has to help.

He talks to himself, trying to overcome the feeling of helplessness, but also clearly exposing of lack of tact and self-disrespect.
When confronted with an issue to overcome, he is faced with the voices inside his head, which is why the voice projection of Vergil exists to reflect the obvious reference - The Divine Comedy.

Why I wanted to reveal Vergil this late in the story, compared to the Divine Comedy, which introduces him as a supporting character in the beginning, was to let Stephen come to the realization that after helping the girls, he should help himself.
Stephen before being brought into this Artificial World was a secluded guy just in the need to simulate real emotions through a game.

And once he saw the opportunity to experience this virtual reality, he thought he might get his way... it didn't... he wasn't the protagonist.

He was still stuck trying his hardest to be someone else, just like the older guy he was before - a person who felt the world was against him.

And unable to make a difference between “providing people his support to earn happiness' and “providing his happiness”.

Of course, he is aware somewhat of this lack, but through the character of Alec, someone unable to empathize with anybody and understand Stephen's implication for others, this bully that I created as a representation for rebelling against his existential purpose – kinda like Monika was - makes Stephen cross his threshold of kindness.

Seeing through the characters he has accepted as people and tried to help that his implication meant nothing, he breaks, leaving nothing behind and hoping he can reset everything.

And of course, many people saw this flaw as something dangerous, including himself which made him frustrated.Example 11 - www.deviantart.com/silverpenci…
But despite thinking that he is unlucky, the only person who wants to know him, by circumstances, is luckily Monika.

And standing next to each other, the characters complete their biggest flaws and desires:
- Stephen desires validation through his actions to acknowledge his life's meaning
- while Monika seeks existential validation through the only presence that made her feel real in the first place
But since these goals feel contradictory, of course, Stephen wanted to make sure that Monika would learn to appreciate her existence, while being a supporting character and pretending he wasn't the PLAYER of the visual novel she was desperately seeking.

But in the end, she caught up with his façade, the moment he stepped over his limits while helping the other girls (Yuri was the first to give him the benefit of the doubt)

And then she warmly stepped into his plans to help the other girls, trying to help him first.

I wanted to overall make the relationship feel believable, rather than be a forced romance out of the obsession shown in the visual novel. It felt fairer to let Monika have still her flaws and deception while watching Stephen following his plans and coming to terms with the lesson she learned from the good ending of the game. But overall, she was meant to learn the bigger lesson from watching the actions made by Stephen to improve the events in this new Artificial World.
In the end, that's what I would like a romance to be - two individuals learning their life lessons and about each other.
