Description Here it FINALLY is: My 4th year film!! I was hesitant about putting it up on YouTube because, well, YouTube as we all know is not that well protected. I'm so happy Deviant Art has this professional film submitting option now! ^_^

The only parts of this film I DIDN'T do was the dancing crab clean-up, and 2 of the voices and obviously the music.

Enjoy!

Awe thanks so much!! Basically when making this film, I knew I wasn't by any means the strongest animator, storyteller, drawer etc. so I was like "How do I make my film memorable if not for a certain type of talent??" and somehow I came up with dancing hermit crabs!!

Glad you enjoyed it!! Thanks for your comment! (and sorry for my late reply! ^_^*)

SilverSkye In reply to M1m7 [2013-04-10 01:07:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Actually hermit crabs do make a sound similar to this believe it or not! Although it doesn't come from their mouths, but from their inner legs rubbing their shell (kinda like a cricket, but sounds like... well... a less intonationed version of what I did here haha)

Thanks for the comment!

ANOTHER FUN FACT: the crowd of kids? They are power rangers (the red one has the diamonds on his shirt) b/c that is just how cool I am. ^_^

For a much better show, check out FISH HOOKS - that is what I am working on now! It's silly fun!! (obvious plug) ^_^*

Glad you liked the dancing crabs! Thanx so much for taking the time to watch, and for the comment!

justonorblu In reply to SilverSkye [2009-10-18 06:48:31 +0000 UTC]

hey theres nothing wrong with randomness, if you dont mind me asking how long did it take, from like beginning to first pencil test?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverSkye In reply to justonorblu [2009-10-18 16:22:54 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem at all!

Hm... well it depends on what you mean by 'begining.' The school year started in September, and I'd minus a week for getting settled in and all that...

Then there was thinking up the story, character, layout, and color design, storyboarding it out...

I started animating in January of '08.

So I'd say from the start of pre-production to the first pencil test... :: counts on fingers:: probably a little over 4 months? (I'm thinking about 16 or more weeks?) And I only had 1 class each semester so really, I was working on this the whole time! (even weekends! )

Looking back, I can't believe I did that!

Then I was animating (along with scanning, coloring, cleanup, compiling, painting the layouts) from January until April. And after that... I slept a VERY VERY LONG TIME!

justonorblu In reply to SilverSkye [2009-10-19 00:50:28 +0000 UTC]

its really impressive, kudos for doing it in only 4 months, any tips for a beginner trying to do such an impossible task? lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverSkye In reply to justonorblu [2009-10-20 00:14:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, it was a bit unreasonable (aka NOT like real, more sane life ) how I did it in 4 months... I mean, like I said I only had 1 class a week really and I spent like EVERY MOMENT I was awake working on it! So like... for someone with an actual LIFE and not so OCD it would have taken longer... but been much more healthy!

You are going to make a film too?? AWESOME!! Hm... tips...

I guess, definatly set a time limit for yourself. I saw a lot of people get really excited in the begining, and really motivated to do a 5+ minute film!! But I think that is too long to hold your attention to in order to complete, because it gets a lot tougher as your getting into production and you see what a crazy amount of work that would be!! Then you'll just end up feeling bummed when your motivation and/or time runs out to finish it...

Start with a reasonable time... like 1 - 2 and a half minutes; it might seem like a drag (or hard to fit a story into such a short time!) but such limitation can often yield better stories and films since you have to work hard in the begining to make your story clear and concise, ya know? AND you have more of a chance of finishing it (whether fully or line animation) and you'll feel a lot happier in the end! ^_^

Also, in my opinion you don't want to get too epic with the story line right away... again, for motivation purposes. And it's hard to tell a really complicated story that the audience will understand in such a short time. There were a few of my classmates too, that tried this and it just ended up confusing...

But often people have very involved stories in their minds, and they think "but I love this story!! How can I explain it all?" If you really look at it, you can pic a part of that long epic story that would stand GREAT on it's own! And you may know that Sally is Josie's cousin, whose sister stole Sally's boyfriend in an alternate universe... but are such details REALLY important to what you are trying to say? Often times you can have Sally and Josie relate as they would with this situation in mind, but NOT have to let the viewer know! Having such background information on characters is AWESOME and makes the character all the more rich! But don't get too carried away trying to EXPLAIN everything, ya know?

GAH! I am rambling... (shouldn't drink coffee before coming on DA) Anyways, I wish you the best of luck and feel free to talk to me anytime during the process!! Most importantly: ENJOY MAKING THE FILM!!!! If you don't enjoy it... why make it? ya know?

Dude, this is one of the BEST short animated films I've seen. I'd most definitively love to see more of this. When I saw the lil' crabs in their piramids I felt great to see them there, in their own pre-hispanic world untouched by any nastyness.

Although I loved the mayan references, my gut -my mexican heritage I mean- tells me that they're inacurate in use of colours and glyphs but then I think "oh, what the heck, this is fun and sends a loving message so why not just drop it". So as a mexican with deep native roots I tell you: this is great, don't listen if anyone b*tches about it not being true or too colorful or stuff like that.

And keep 'em coming!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverSkye In reply to eliogabalus [2009-02-15 15:54:48 +0000 UTC]

GAHHH you are too nice!! I am so touched by your words!! Especially from one with a Mexican Heritage!!

Hahaha, yeah... I kinda... well, no not kinda... REALLY took liberties with the Mayan reference. I actually got the colors from a trip I took down to the Yucatan, from the people selling cloth and objects at Chichen Itza. I wanted it to be a crazy over the top color world, so I kinda just went nutso with it.

Did you catch the main crab's shell pattern? I decided to do that based on the Mayan symbol for 'shell' Probably the only actual correct reference

Thanx so much for watching, and leaving such an honest and heartfelt comment!! I am so happy you enjoyed it, and thanx for the encouragment!!
