A single tear splashed onto the kitchen counter. A shaking hand poured some liquid into a glass. The bottle slipped and smashed onto the kitchen tiles. Not noticing, the slender figure gripped the glass in her hand. Delicate fingers began to reach for a packet of cigarettes but then pulled back sharply, as if they were being scolded.

She brought the glass slowly to her trembling lips but her hand was shaking so much most of the beverage ended up on the cold kitchen tiles rather than in her mouth. She was staring at something far away, her slim form trembling in the flickering light.

Suddenly her eyes snapped back into focus and she stared hard at the glass in her hand, her eyes burning with an emotion that was difficult to describe. Her lips were pressed tightly together, turning their soft fullness into sharp lines. A small amount of brown liquid swirled around the bottom of the glass. Her delicate fingers clenched around it. Then with a sudden scream she hurled it to the tiles, watching as it exploded into tiny transparent shards. A sob clawed its way up her throat and she bit her lip, refusing it leave from her mouth. She wasn’t going to shed tears because of him.

Instead, eyes burning, body trembling, she walked over the mess of glass, listening as they cracked and broke under her shoe. Walking over them slowly at first in an effort to keep calm, her emotions finally took over and soon she was crushing the glass into dust under her foot, tears streaming from her eyes. “You jerk!” she sobbed, the cracks and pops of glass beneath her feet fueling the inferno of feelings swirling inside her. “You dick, you bastard, you absolute creep!” she screamed, emphasizing each insult with a smash of her foot against the tiles. Soon her foot couldn’t take it anymore and she collapsed onto the tiles, not even noticing as shards of glass embedded themselves into the soft skin of her hands. She wrapped her arms around her knees and sobbed without restraint. For once her calm, cool exterior had been broken, revealing a vulnerable and somewhat scared young girl who had just been crushed inside.

Her sobs eventually ebbed in their intensity and soon she was left sitting in the shards of glass, shaking from the aftermath of her storm of emotions. A few stray tears made their way down her cheeks, but she ignored them. Instead she once again stared off into the distance, breathing heavily.

The sound of the door opening woke her from her thoughts. Almost in confusion she looked at her bloodied hands, as if wondering how they got into that position. She rose slowly and walked over to the sink, listening to the glass crunching underneath her shoe. She washed her hands, carefully picking out the glass. The tap had just turned off when she felt his strong arms wrap around her waist, and for a second she had to stop herself from leaning into him and burying her face into his chest to breathe in his musky scent. Whirling away from him she stared him down, the fire in her eyes rivaling the flames of hell.

“What the fuck are you doing?” she hissed, wrapping her arms around her body in an effort not to fall apart.

He paused in surprise and then grinned, as if he thought she was playing a joke on him. Grinned. As if nothing had happened! As if he hadn’t ripped her heart out and stamped all over it, leaving it shattered and useless on the ground. “I’m trying to hug my girlfriend. What are you doing?” He replied a lilt in his voice that at one time would turn her into a puddle. Now it only made her feel sick. She trembled as he came closer, wrapping her arms tighter around her body. He touched her cheek. “Babe?”

She snapped.

Her hand lashed out and slapped his cheek, making his neck snap back. His eyes went wide and she felt immense pleasure in wiping the smug. Self-satisfied look from his face. The sharp sound of the smack reverberated around the room. Her hand stung. A large red welt appeared on his sculpted cheek. She blinked and looked closer. She saw blood.

A violent emotion ripped through her when she saw it. A mixture of pride, rage, guilt and satisfaction. She looked at her hand, noticing the silver ring on her delicate hand was smeared with blood.  A violet shudder ripped through her and she had to press her lips together in order to stop herself bursting into laughter.

He hadn’t moved. His head was tilted to the side, his glossy black hair that she so loved to run her fingers through covering his face.

He turned back, his eyes burning with anger. “What the fuck was that for?” he shouted, clapping a hand to his injured cheek.

“You know damn well.” She whispered furiously, clenching her hands into fists. “Do you think I’m stupid?”

“What are you going on about?!”

She braced herself against the counter, not trusting her legs to keep her standing upright. “Don’t act like you don’t know, Alexander!” She screamed. “I’m talking about that little blonde slut you fucked the other day! I’m guessing that’s where you were just now then?”

Again she had the satisfaction of seeing is eyes grow wide with surprise. “How did you-”

“I went to your place to surprise you.” She laughed bitterly at the memory. “Instead I was the one who got surprised.”

Alexander paled. “Jacqueline-”

Jacqueline stared viciously into his eyes, her fingers clutching the counter tightly. “You bastard!” She screamed, tears running freely down her cheeks again. “I loved you! I trusted you!” Alexander reached out for her but she flinched away. “I was going to marry you!” she yelled, wrenching the bloodied ring from her finger and dashing it to the ground. It lay among the shattered remains of the glass. “How appropriate.” She muttered, stalking out of the kitchen and going into her bedroom.

He rushed after her. “Jacqueline I – please – it’s not-”

She whirled around. “It’s not what I think?” she sneered. “I’m not an idiot Alexander! Do you think I was born yesterday?”

Alexander refused to be beat down. “Jacqueline, she meant nothing to me!”

Jacqueline laughed. “No. I was the one that meant nothing to you.” She sat down on her bed, her eyes fixed on the floor as the fight slowly ebbed out of her.

“Jacqueline…please listen to me.” His voice cracked. He sounded crushed. Defeated.

Good. Let him suffer.

When she looked up again her face was a mask of composed cam. Even her eyes were dull, save for a searing pain burning dimly behind her midnight blue eyes. “Go.” She whispered softly, her voice monotone and void of emotion. “Get out.”

“Jacqueline-”

She ignored him. Instead she stooped under her bed and pulled out a suitcase which she lay out on the bed. Then, calmly and methodically, she began to pack.

He watched her, pained. “Jackie, are you leaving?” He said it with such hurt, with such sorrow that she froze. She almost ran back into his arms to comfort him, to tell him she loved him. Cursing herself at her stupidity she focused hard on folding her clothes.

“Yes.” She answered. She looked up. He was hardly able to meet her eyes. “I’m leaving. Don’t look for me. I never want to see you again.”

“Jackie-”

“Just go Alexander.” She said, her voice hurt and weary. “Just go. I have nothing more to say.” She looked down and began packing again. He hesitated for a moment. Then she heard him walk slowly out. Out of her house, out of her life. He shut the door slowly behind him.

Once he had gone she collapsed onto the bed, looking at the ceiling. It was blurred. A short, tired sigh escaped her. She had a vague idea of where she was going. She remembered seeing in the paper about a few homes there. But she didn’t want to wait. She wanted to leave now, tonight.

Which meant she needed somewhere to stay.

Sighing again she walked over to her desk and turned on her computer. After a few minutes she found something. A grim smile stretched across her face as she read it.

“Heartbreak Hotel.” She murmured. “How fitting.”

Ahhh, I remember reading Heartbreak Hotel! It's awesome to see you revisit it; backstories are always cool to read and learn about.

I'd definitely want to see Jason's story if you write it
