Description Before the Man of Steel, there was the Man of Bronze. And before the Fab Four, there was the Fabulous Five.

Out of 1930s pulp fiction, the same realm as The Shadow and Buck Rogers, comes Doc Savage.

Clark "Doc" Savage Jr.
Trained from birth to right wrongs, aid the oppressed and rid the world of evil-doers, Doc Savage is a man of superhuman strength and genius. From his office on the 86th floor of Manhattan's most impressive skyscraper, he conducts his unusual business with the help of his five aids.

Starting at the top left (in the blue circle) and going clockwise:

Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Blodgett "Monk" Mayfair
"Last came the most remarkable character of all. Only a few inches over five feet tall, he weighed better than two hundred and sixty pounds. He had the build of a gorilla, arms six inches longer than his legs, a chest thicker than it was wide. His eyes were so surrounded by gristle as to resemble pleasant little stars twinkling in pits. He grinned with a mouth so very big it looked like an accident. "Monk!" No other name could fit him!"

Brigadier General Theodore Marley "Ham" Brooks
"Slender, waspy, quick-moving, Ham looked what he was-a quick thinker and possibly the most astute lawyer Harvard ever turned out. He carried a plain black cane-never went anywhere without it. This was, among other things, a sword cane."

Colonel John "Renny" Renwick
"A giant who towered four inches over six feet. He weighed fully two fifty. His face was severe, his mouth thin and grim, and compressed tightly, as though he has just finished uttering a disapproving, "tsk! tsk! sound. His features had a most puritanical look. His arms were enormous, his fists bony monstrosities. His favorite act was to slam his great fists through the solid panel of a heavy door. He was known throughout the world for his engineering accomplishments, also."

William Harper "Johnny" Littlejohn
"Very tall and very gaunt. Johnny wore glasses with a peculiarly thick lens over the left eye. He looked like a half-starved, studious scientist. He was probably one of the greatest living experts on geology and archeology."

Major Thomas J. "Long Tom" Roberts
"Long Tom was the physical weakling of the crowd, thin, not very tall, and with a none too healthy appearing skin. He was a wizard with electricity."

Good depiction of Doc and the guys.

Thanks! I've been meaning to revisit this, actually.

Very good work and I only have two minor critiques;

Monk doesn't look bulky enough and Renny's fists don't look as grotesque as they should.

Other than that I like it!

I agree - I need to redraw these guys. It's been awhile!

Thanks for the critique! I look forward to drawing these guys again...

The clothes and general style works well together. The guy in the middle, why the golden shade on the skin? Also, the foreshortening didn't go quiiiite right.

I like the composition of it, how they kind of poke out of their circles.

I like how they come out of their circles too. The guy in the middle is supposed to have bronze skin; Doc Savage was a pulp fiction hero of the 30s and was nicknamed the Man of Bronze. I went off a photo for the foreshortening, but yeah, it could still use some work. Thanks!

I'd go for a bit of shine on the skin to show that is not a tan gone wrong.

I think Stephen Lang would be excellent in this.

Hmm...I don't know, he might be a little old. As long as they cast someone big enough, stoic enough and awe-inspiring enough - someone who can actually play the role of Doc - I'll be happy.

True; I can think of a few 'flavours of the month' that they'd better NOT name as potential Docs...

You drew them all very well! They all look very clean and neatly colored and drawn. You also captured their individuality well. They each look like a completely different person, with a completely different personality. I think you did a good job adapting these characters into your own work. Good job!

Thank you so much! I worked very hard to try and capture what I thought each of the five looked like, and based Doc off of James Bama's (although I could never come close to his mastery!)

Thanks so much for the comment! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Wait...you didn't copy these off of anything? Most of these are your own original design? Then take my compliments and double them!

And no problem, Murray Christmas and Happy New Year!

Great work!
I remember reading a single comic of Doc Savage sometime in the 70's, still have it somewhere. Although all I can remember from it was Doc battling a snake & a city of skulls, but it was quite brilliant!!
Never could find any others. *sigh*

Silvre In reply to flyashy [2009-12-14 06:09:43 +0000 UTC]

Haha, from what my Dad has told me, the 70s Doc Savage comics were awful. Not the pulps are well written, but the comics just took the characters out of context.

Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, it's pretty interesting. The novels are not well written. At all. But the plots are interesting, and I love the characters, especially Monk and Ham.

Silvre In reply to Lordwormm [2009-12-14 06:11:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!

A new movie is in development, so I've heard. I just hope they make it like Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark and not like Indy & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I think a darker, more serious take, without compromising the lovableness of the characters would be really great. And it must be set in the 30s, not present day. It just wouldn't work.

Lordwormm In reply to Silvre [2009-12-14 23:08:43 +0000 UTC]

Really? I hadn't heard but am glad to hear it! Have to agree with you about the crystal skull!

Also agree, it must be set in the 30's. They pulled off the Phantom, Dick Tracy and The Shadow wonderfully I thought, maybe a little campy, but oh well. Did you ever see the original Doc Savage movie? You can probably watch it on line somewhere.

Silvre In reply to Lordwormm [2009-12-15 18:26:26 +0000 UTC]

Ugh, no offense but I don't want to see the original Doc Savage movie. It looks horribly campy...I foundt his site that gave screen caps and summaries of the movie...and Doc and the gang singing? I don't think so.

Lordwormm In reply to Silvre [2009-12-16 01:50:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, trust me, it is verrrry campy! I loved it back when I was younger though, it's a fond memory. I didn't know anything about Doc Savage until I got my first novel!

Not bad...don't forget Patricia(Pat), Doc's sister..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Silvre In reply to cresent34 [2009-12-13 20:12:15 +0000 UTC]

Actually, she was his cousin. The reason I didn't put her in this picture is because I'm not a big fan of Pat. She just seems like the token female that's only there to have a female in the stories. She's a spinoff of Doc Savage - like Batgirl or Supergirl. She just seemed like she got in the way. That's the reason she's not in this picture.

But thanks for looking! I appreciate your comments.
