Description
This is a little taste of what a new book I'm working on...I always like to figure out what my characters look like on "paper" before/while writing the story...it helps me visualize them better when writing. This is Prince Damarion from my new novel project, The Mountain and the Sea. You can follow my progress and bits n' pieces on Tumblr [link] !
Pick your favorite! And if you don't like any of them, suggest some color schemes yourself. I'm open to other variations. Thanks!
Thanks to *NatashaAndrei4ever for use of her poll!

Yes, I did. Also I read your post on your tumblr about asking those profs questions. Good for you! And quick responses too. (Now if only I could contact NASA...maybe I could try finding the author of a " the science behind star trek/star wars" book. There's bound to be one of those.)
The merman looks fantastic. Squee-ishly so.

I'm sure you could find out a way to contact NASA or some rocket scientists (which are real professions, lol). What are you looking to do research on?
Thank you very much. I really love Damarion already...he already has a lot of story behind him that I haven't shared.

Daramion is an astounding being, one readily sense the strength and regality that is in the fiber of his being.
I agree with your one brother regarding the Romanesque qualities A radiates with the color schemes of red and gold. Though, if they mean to blend in with ocean, perhaps D would be more suitable.
Would you like this to be a Poll on my page? I can post it today if you wish.

Are they living in tropical waters or cold waters? Are we picturing lush coral reefs or dark kelp forests? Tropical fish are all kinds of bright colors. You could even have fun with it giving different families/clans of mermen different color patterns.
Camouflage isn't that important if you are the biggest thing around and aren't really worried about other critters eating you. Unless you are a sit-and-wait predator and need to sneak up unsuspecting prey. And on the other hand, particularly bright colors usually serve to send some kind of message - I'm poisonous, or I'm a healthy vibrant individual, or I'm a member of your species, etc.

They are living in cold waters, with dark kelp...it's like the coasts of the UK. The Merrow (merpeople) are at war with the Fianna (humans), and the Merrowmen need to be able to kind of lay low in the water to try to be undetected by their enemies.

The A merman could hide well in kelp that's red.

There are tons of red algae out there (seaweeds and kelps are forms of algae), and while what we know as kelp is brown algae, this is your fantasy world. I think you can have a species of merpeople living in blood red kelp forests if you want. There's also the fact that many fish can change their colors under different circumstances. At the very least you could have the tail section able to become brighter or duller for when they're strutting and sneaking, respectively.

That's a really cool idea, actually. I love the "blood red kelp" image, and especially the image of them changing color. Perhaps the colors can be based on emotional chemical changes.
Thanks, cuz!

I like that image too, if I say so myself! I'm already hearing legends about how the kelp is red from the blood of all the Merrow's fallen enemies....*cue creepy music*

I like B and D best. I like the muted colors of B, seems neutral rather than the bright, slightly antagonistic red of A. B looks like something you'd find in the ocean--the blue/grey of the tail almost reminds me of Flotsam and Jetson....
I like D because it looks pretty solid and stable--almost regal. It reminds me of deep, dark ocean.
Do you know if spending more time underwater (away from the direct sunlight) would have affected their coloring? On the other hand, I guess there are a lot of colorful fish out there...

I think I'm leaning towards B the most, but I'm not sure yet.
I can't tell you how many times I thought of the Little Mermaid already, lol.
I would think that the sun wouldn't having any bearing on color of fish, because, as you said, there's a lot of really colorful fish out there, and some of them live pretty deep underwater.

I also like A or D.
A gives off the most Roman qualities. But I also like D for the color combinations. The other two are fine, but I find them too Pastel-y I guess.

I like the Romanesque colors of A, but they would stick out like a sore thumb...D would camouflage better.
