Was the snake simply close to the glass? 40mm is pretty wide for macro. You did a great job!

yep. Sitting right at the glas and watching. 
I was lucky that I could take a picture so close with a 40mm.

I'm surprised it lets you get that close! I'm impressed. I was thinking of buying the 60mm 2.8G instead.

Do you like that little lens? Is it good for flower photography?

Sadly I got no other macro to compare. 
This lens is my first macro

I love the quality of the lens and the autofocus is fine on a normal distance. On close range, you have to do it manually.

I got no chance yet to make a photo of a flower. Sorry =/

That's pretty cool. I know it's not long enough for bug photography, but I don't like bugs anyway.

But the shells and forms are impressive on close range.

Anyway, the best thing is to try both and decide which focal lengh you prefer
