Oh come on, others must have mentioned the spots

In anycase, I love how young Kovu is, fits with the overall implied timeline

thank you.

my favorite time of a cat's life is when the mom will bring in small prey for her kittens to kill. to most people, this is a dreadful thing. but i think it's soooo cute!

(but then, i have some severe emotional problems, so.....)

*nods* I like watching that too, worked with wolves for a bit and foxes, the foxes do more of the bringing of live prey thoug neither of the canines 'lay' with said items as much as cats.

It is cute, but I'm weird too, so *shrugs*

Oh! What did you think of the Pridelands map(s)? I keep forgetting to ask.

*blushes* Wow, thanks! Anything you like/dislike about it, or points you think I got wrong/on-the-button?

Me too! Zira is my favorite psycho villainess XD

DangerousRadical [2009-01-23 22:21:42 +0000 UTC]

When I first watched TLKII, the first thing that struck me about Zira was, in her own way, she saw her exile as a way to raise her cubs and her clan in her devotion to Scar. Whether or not Disney intended to show this soft, gentle, playful side to her, on top of all that harshness and sadism, Zira was a patient mother, if a little cuckoo.

In a sense, in my opinion, Zira's "madness" was brought on by Kiara's "undoing" of her hard work. She had taken all that time to program Kovu, shown him her gentler, kinder side (only to him it seemed, in regards to her feelings about Nuka), and felt 'replaced' by Kiara in a way.

I love villainesses, and villains, and though Disney could have left the original take of the film alone instead of cutting it down (re: hacking and slashing it in parts), Zira was left pretty much as she was. Her madness and the strength of her rage was toned down to make her slightly more "acceptable" for a children's audience, but apart from that, she remained a very likeable, and humanistic, villainess.

Looking at this pic, yes, I can see this happening. Zira's coyness, her slyness, her gentleness is on display here. I don't think she would not have done this with Nuka, but perhaps Nuka was less graceful, less "killer" with his approach given his cowardice in the face of his mother. Kovu here is eager to learn, please and show off his skills. It wouldn't surprise me that long before his maturing years, he was taking down targets thrice his size due to her teachings.

And don't tell me your lineart fails. You got Zira down to the scraggy, exiled leader she was. Straight lines in the places where you believe you could have done better would have made Zira feel as if she was pasted onto the background, not a part of the whole picture. Zira was tough, and her appearance (cleanliness) meant very little to her. She was a shaggy, slightly unkempt creature and your lineart does her justice. This is the Zira I saw when I watched TLKII, and you got her down perfectly.

I ramble far too much. You deserve this:

awww, thanks!
something else to consider: she was able to organize and hold together a clan of very hungry, disaffected lionesses - for YEARS!!! that would never have happened if she had not been an effective leader. so there is definitely more to her than meets the eye. as crazy as she is, i really admire her, the way i admire hannibal lector. i certainly wouldn't want to be her bbf, or meet her in some dark alley, but i still can't help liking her.

DangerousRadical In reply to Simbamarasa [2009-01-24 07:44:27 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. Zira is a timeless villainess in many ways, and definitely deserving of the title. And it's always wonderful to see artists peeling back the many complexities and layers great characters like her have.

I have no doubts whatsoever that her leadership came at a heavy price, and kept going with similar heavy prices to endure. Her eventual suicide (not death by slip and fall, I don't believe that watered down ending Disney fed us), came as the ultimate satisfaction, to herself, to her madness and to her memory of Scar. What I always wanted to see was Vitani's reaction to Zira's suicide, as we only saw Kovu's. Losing Nuka possibly escalated her madness, and hatred, for everything that was going wrong with all her best-laid plans, especially Kovu.

Zira ranks right up there with the Wicked Stepmother, Maleficent, Ursula and Medusa. So many layers of complexities and so many ways to discover them X3

i think until zira came along, i think that maleficent was my fav. disney villainess. she was so elegant, intelligent, and just so freekin cool. but more than that, she was patient and willing to wait years to get her revenge. she also made one hell of a cool dragon!

DangerousRadical In reply to Simbamarasa [2009-01-24 09:04:01 +0000 UTC]

When it's a villainess, they've gotta have a back-up plan or three. Maleficent's was her Dragon form. And jeezus, it was freakin' AWESOME to boot

Mmm...must watch all th' old classics sometime this weekend...

i had meant to only post non-tlk stuff here, but someone said i should post "shadows". i get way more comments on DA than i ever got on FAA, so i get more feedback here. i guess that's why i decided to do this.

You know, if Zira were a good lioness I don't think she'd look quite so bad. Take the nip out of her ear, put a little meat on her bones and age her down a little and she wouldn't be bad to look at.
