I hear a lot of complaints about CGI animation, and I must say-- why the discrimination? CGI has just the amount of potential as any medium, animated or otherwise. Yet, I see the most complaints about this one.
"Why can't we go back to 2D?"
Well, 2D is nice, and it IS still done. Japanese animation is still for the most part 2D, cartoons are 2D, American animated films are 2D every now and then. Animation is developing, and yet people are complaining, which I think is silly.
Ratatouille belongs to PIXAR
Tangled belongs to DISNEY
How to train your dragon belongs to DREAMWORKS
Despicable me belongs to ILLUMINATION ENTERTAINMENT

People keep saying that there isn't much 2D & that CGI is taking over, because it's the truth. How many 2D animated films have we gotten in the past 5-10 years, very little, & nothing more than CGI animation simply done because people will pay more for watching that shit, I.E. people only make CGI animated films for the cash-grab. And Pixar is to blame, because they started all of this CGI -cash-grabbing crap & why we don't get that many 2D films anymore with all of their shitty, boring, predictable, & over-the-top kiddie crap films (with the exceptions of Wall-E, The Incredibles, & Monsters Inc.). And Japan is still making 2D animated movies, but are we getting anymore of them? No. And you know what? It's because of CGI animation that Studio Ghibli (the only damn animation company that is keeping 2D animation alive & hasn't resorted to any of that CGI cash-grabbing crap) has been considering NOT releasing their movies outside of Asia, because they can clearly see that their films will be ignored & be paid less attention to while shit like Pixar & CGI animation is still around.
I swear if that Mickey Mouse movie Disney has in plans to make is done using CGI instead of 2D, I will hate Pixar more than I hate Disney Channel.

Whenever I find something related to 2d or 3d animation I almost always find a comment from you shit talking CG animation while praising 2d without giving any reason why your doing that. Could you please list the reasons why you think traditional animation is so great and CG sucks (don't put reasons like "CG is cash-grab" or "CG is overused". Ive heard those reasons way too much)
BTW: I'm not saying that CG animation should never be talked about negatively in any way. I happen to be one of those people who want's more 2d animation in the industry.

KooboriSapphire In reply to Lalunabluena [2014-01-12 01:07:27 +0000 UTC]
I've already listed them in my previous statement. And if "cash-grab" or "CG is overused" aren't reasons then what are? Do you want me to say that because the animations industry doesn't give a shit about 2D anymore & all they want to do is make idiots pay more money for a CG, while just putting 2D on a worse state of life support than it's already in just because "technology is moving forward"? Is that what you want to hear me say?
And just to answer the questions, because not only does it look more expressive, & elegant, but also because I want to get a goddamn job in it (the big screen, not the TV mediocrity it's in). Obviously I won't get a job in the industry for it anymore. Also because it's a dying art form, if not already dead.

I wasn't saying that "CG is overused/ cash-grad" weren't reasons, I just find those reasons to be kind of overused. But since you did give a legit reason why you think 2d animation is better I can't really say much else other than 2d animation is not dead. It's only dying in the United states (any maybe some other western countries) and it is possible to stop it from dying. Β Β Β

It's practically dead in the US; actually it isn't considered very American anymore.
And Ghibli is the only company keeping the medium alive, & even then people done recognize their sheer genius & prefer crap like Cars 2 rather than Arrietty.

Yes 2d isn't considered American anymore but I still think big American studios like Disney will eventually find out that 2d can make just as much money as CG while also improving their image. I'm actually quite surprised they haven't realized that already considering how successful Studio Ghibli is both critically and commercially.Β Β Β Β

They won't, it's already proven. The Princess & the Frog, while not a flop, didn't do as great in the box office as Disney wanted it to. Tangled & Wreck-it-Ralph practically tripled in box office earnings. So Disney at the moment doesn't have any 2D developments, and it looks like they won't be having any at all. And Ghibli isn't doing so well with their films either. They do fine, just not as great as they should (this is why Ghibli actually didn't want to release their films into America anymore).
The only way 2D will do better in the box office again is if someone banishes CG for good.

CGI is not Pixar, it is not Shrek, it is not Monsters Inc... CGI is the original purpose of computers... A machine built to calculate and generate graphics, to virtually simulate physics and eventually simulate anything even other computers, even brains and etc... Eventually people started to use it for all sorts of things... Accurate Blueprints, Animations, videogames, movies special FX... The Internet itself is also another byproduct of computers and probably the most disgraceful one... CGI is not limited to 3D, anything you see on the screen of your computer is a CG (Computer Graphic), even JPG,PNG photos (which are conversions from reality light projections to CG)... It seems your hatred is more focused on the 3D virtual object and physics simulation technology... Maybe you should go back in time to 1963 like a terminator and destroy the MIT Sketchpad and kill Ivan Sutherland? Wait it would still not stop CGI from eventually appearing... Hum... Maybe the only way would be to induce a nuclear war during the cold war... So instead of todays world full of Pixar CGI animations, you would live in a Mad Max world with no animation at all... Wouldn't it be amazing?

No animation at all? We'd have 2D & stop motion. The only forms of animation I support. And I'd only go back in time to rid Pixar from this world for good.

zero000101478 In reply to KooboriSapphire [2013-04-07 19:49:18 +0000 UTC]
Well because if the world was devastated by nuclear war animation in general would be pretty much scarce and take several decades to be recovered... The world would be pretty much fucked... Everybody would be poor, starving and worried about survival you know... Maybe the best you can do is to try to kill Ivan Sutherland even though he did not create pixar, or any CGI animation whatsoever... You would "release" your anger upon him and feel better perhaps? Ivan Sutherland is responsible for a great advancement in technology that is used in Autocad, Blender 3D, Sketchup, Google Earth, 3D games such as Metal Gear Solid and Banjo Kazooie, CGI animations, Super Computer simulations and etc... Pretty much everything you hate... But I think that even if you go back to 1963 and kill him there, someone else would eventually replace him...

video games & software are a completely different subject from 3D animation, & I could give less of a shit about the fact that they're done in CG. I want Pixar do die, end of story.

The difference... Is that The videogames & softwares are the graphical engine itself... while the CGI animations are just "products" of graphical engines, high quality pre-rendered images with voice acting and stuff that is common to all types of animation... My question is... Is your hate for pixar powerful enough for you to hate anything related to it's existence? My opinion is that if your hate have such potential... You should embrace it and destroy all your computers, including game consoles and other appliances...

I haven't seen any good CGI movies, with the exception of Tangled.
And no, everything is being done in CGI shit now. My favorite book by Hans Christen Anderson, The Snow Queen, went from being 2D to CGI because of all this cash-grab shit. The Lorax & Horton Hears a Who went from being 2D to CGI, & now I hear Popeye is going to be done using CGI as well. If that Mickey Mouse movie goes from being 2D to CGI, I will hate Pixar more than I hate Disney Channel (because they started all of this CGI animation crap). I hate CGI animation, it's slowly making 2D films being forgotten (Studio Ghibli being the ONLY studio out there keeping the medium alive), & nothing anyone tells me will change my mind. I just don't get why people love watching all of these shitty movies with ugly character designs, boring, predictable, & bland story-telling.

We really should admit the fact. Compared to Hand-Drawn Animation, and even Stop-Motion, Computer Animation is still kinda new....But, Computer Animation has to be used right.
Especially with Live-Action, everything is computers. Yes we still use models, set locations, and even animatronic puppets but on a grand scale it's mostly cgi. For films like PJ's King Kong as well as the recent Planet of The Apes Movie there is absolutely nothing wrong with that...but if you look at it carefully the cgi we use nowadays is not all that amazing (Except with maybe the avengers but only those alien whales).
My Point, Keep making Computer Animated movies, but also keep stop-motion and hand-drawn animation alive. As for Live-Action... hey by all means keep it But use it well and bring back the models and animatronics while your at it; it will keep it cheaper for at least half the shots (I'm talking to The Movie Industry BTW).

The only problem is that I think there IS a matter of truth to the argument that CGI is taking over. So many CGI movies are being made nowadays that people who aren't animation buffs get a little wary when a 2D film comes along. I mean, Disney's last couple of 2D films were more marketed to children, and a lot of CGI ones these days market a bit more to adults. This is also probably why CGI films are more successful. And when they're successful, more are made.
Trust me, I love both (I have a goal to work at Pixar some day - yes, I am one of those people ), but I would really love to see Pixar do a 2D film if just because they are masters at stories for the whole family and it might give 2D some redeeming quality in the market. I don't think people knock CGI for storytelling issues, but rather the fact that it is kinda overrunning traditional animation. And me, I am personally not an anime fan - I hate that that and cartoons are such a majority of the traditional animation field nowadays.

I myself prefer 2D animation for the most part for the look of it. I made this stamp simply because I've seen many people bash CGI needlessly. The point of animation, like any medium, is to tell a story, and CGI does that just fine. That's why I made the stamp. I would like to see more 2D animated films myself. I think Disney's next movie, Frozen, will be 2D. We can hope for the best there.
I also like anime just as much as western animation. I'm not bias against either side. I just like animation and good story telling.

Because Tangled was a beautifully animated movie with luscious visuals, superb storytelling (far better than it's source), wonderful characters, a whole theme that gives me that good old Disney feel & that good old hand-drawn movie feel only done using CGI, beautiful songs & score, a solid plot, well-written script, & the only good CGI animated movie Disney has made. Whereas crap like Ratatouille was the same boring, predictable shit from Pixar with their ugly characters, mediocre soundtracks, & another CGI cash-grab fest from the mediocre company that ruined a once abundant (& superior) form of animation.

Well, I was trying to pick different studios instead of filling the stamp with Pixar. Also, I think neither are terrible. Despicable me certainly wasn't the best animated movie ever, but it wasn't bad at all, and I actually really liked Tangled as well (although I was considering putting in Bolt in instead, but then I would have had more people bitching at me.) CGI has its purpose, and certain films (HTTYD, Tangled, etc) would not have had that same magic that they did hand-drawn. I love hand-drawn films, but that doesn't mean I hate CGI. They're both amazing in their own respects, and people need to appreciate what goes into it. It honestly bugs me how many people hate Tangled because it's CGI when it honestly has some of the most beautiful art I've seen in an animated movie, "I See the Light" particularly standing out, as well as her hair throughout.
