Description
EDIT: Removed the frame, it bothered me... Plus, made the picture lighter. Hope you all like the changes. Here it is... My biggest, most detailed picture yet. Started it about one week ago and spent quite a lot of time on this, and am very happy with the result. I hope you are too. Feel free to ask any questions about it that aren't answered here or in the Making-Of. I'd love to read and answer them.
I'd appreciate detailed and constructive Critique immensely, as I'd really like to improve even further and am always encouraged by knowing that a person really spent some time looking at my picture and thinking about his comment before clicking the "Send" button.
Please click HERE to view a short Making-Of, Detail Shots and very important Facts about the Picture itself.
Also, I got very inspired by this colouring tutorial [link] and really want to plug it here. Hope it'll inspire and help you as it did me.
You might also ask, after viewing the Detail Shots, why I made everything so detailed, when in the final version the lighting sort of blocks out most of the details. Well, because I can, now that I have a stronger notebook.
Oh, and I hate to say this, but....

This a great piece of art ! ^^. I like the frames it really shows a sense of a family line or family tree and how it goes to being more and more modern
. The lighting gives it a great feeling of time and stories to tell especially with the old style pattern wall paper ^^. Overall its great and style really fits it *fav*
Critique
The monocle could be more clear and glassy like, they kinda look foggy. I see you added some spider web, its a nice detail but only being 1 little place, maybe their should of been a couple of more some where and not just one little place

Really insane amount of details there, nearly a masterpiece. I love your Anthro drawing style, cartoony enough to look neat and funny, and realist enough to not look super-deformed. The overall atmosphere of the drawing is very warm yet with some mystery and the precise handling of the shades and lighting helps a lot to it. Not 'ing this would be a crime against everything that's considered art. I'd love to know what's the story behind it.

One thing I forgot to add though, "Old English", royal settings and traditional gentleman-like characters always fascinated me, and I always enjoyed doodling my characters sporting top hats, monocles and the like, so that is probably also some sort of story behind it.

Heh, I feel really honoured by your comment! Especially since I always like to hear opinions on my drawing style itself!
Story behind it? *laughs* Strangely enough, even though this is my most detailed work yet, there isn't any real story... One day I just got the idea for it in my head, it stuck for some time and then I decided the start drawing the picture...
However, it was subliminally inspired by this comic book cover: [link] Subliminally meaning, I saw that cover a long time ago in an advertisement, and only remember it when I was half-way through the drawing.
Again, thank you very much for your long comment! Highly appreciate you taking the time!

Haha, maybe I overreacted a bit, but surely it's better than writing "OMG!!11! I LUV UR ART ITS SO KAWAII LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!! ^____^" Kinda was part of the mood of the moment.
Haha, kind of true that most of the brillant ideas just pop on your head just like that, and after a while (or not) you find out what your source of inspiration was, subconscious mind plays an important part in the creative process after all.
Anyway, I'm also happy you took the time to reply to my comment, specially since I find out that some of the "popular" and renowned artists don't do that because they don't have the time / don't consider it worthy.

Right, I've waited until I had time to write a nice, long comment for this particular piece.
Of course, Dodger in the foreground looks reallyt great and the shadows and light from the lamp look really effective on his face.
And now we come to the background; the wallpaper patterns looks awesome and gives a very 'cultured English gentlemen's home' sort of feel, and it goes really well with the stitching of the armchair. The pictures are really great too, they give the picture more interest and depth.
Where'd you get the idea for this picture? It's really awesome, one of your best works yet, definately an ol' from me!

I feel honoured that you decided to give this comment time and consideration! Thank you so much for your detailed analysis, I'm glad you like it!
About where I got the inspiration... There is a certain comic book that was advertised in a series I read, and it's cover had the basic concept of this picture. I came up with it randomly though and only realized the relation midway during drawing this, but I guess that cover stuck with me and subliminally inspired this piece. Here it is, in case you want to know: [link] ETAIL_COUV&lang=UK&NART=1119830

simondrawsstuff In reply to satelitedish [2006-09-17 12:53:21 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I wanted it to have an "English" feeling to it... And the expression, it's like supposed to be a portrait of him, not a moment captured, so that was the most fitting one I could think of.
Thanks for the commment.

I know stuff about the books has been said above but it's sad that with the lighting you lose the titles of the books.. oh well at least .I. know what they say lol Great job Simon I absolutely the the pictures!! Now.. are these pictures hung on the wall of the humans' house or does Dodger have his own little doggy mansion?? lol I wuv the baby pictures *huggles*

Glad you like it so much! And whose wall that is, since the picture looks like a comic book cover in my opinion, I was thinking of doing a "matching" storyline where Dodger inherits some huge mansion or even rulership over the whole city, something like that... Maybe I'll do it after I'm done with the current one... >_> Anyways, thanks for the comment!

Oh, most excellent work! I can tell you put a load of time into this, and it looks fantastic. I love the details, from the leather chair to the picture frames and book covers...and is that a cob web I see? (Or it could just be the lighting in here. XD) I also really like the bifocal, what a great touch. It makes him look so mysterious, and perhaps a bit mad.
The whole thing definitely has a "weird" feeling to it. Kinda reminds me of a room within a haunted masion. Where's Nancy Drew when you need her!
Again, great work! C:

Yes, it's a cob web! Glad you noticed it without viewing the downloadable detail-shots....
Bifocal? Wasn't intentional. To be honest, I didn't even know the word bifocal until your comment.
Anyways, thank you very much for your detailed comment. And I'm glad the picture has a "weird" feeling. For obvious reasons.

It's interesting that there is one picture of two humans, that's a nice touch, I love all the fine details you've gone into, like writting on the books, I can only read the one that says 23, but it's nice to know that you've gone that far to write on them all.
I really love how you've done all the eyes, by far one of the best pics I've seen in a while, I really like your style as well, it's so refreshing and different to a lot of other anthro art out there, I love it I think it's great.

Thank you very much for the comment and the fav!
Yes, the humans are characters in my webcomic... They more or less take care of Dodger, the main character in this picture, and provide him a home so I thought they deserved to be in it.
About the writing on the books.... If you click the "Download" button, a different picture opens, with a Making-Of and Detail Shots, including the books... They should be readable there.
Really glad you enjoyed this picture!
