Description I've had this idea for a long time and I finally got to it.An homage to my favorite era in cartoons a la "Dogs playing poker"
From left to right: Foxy, Bimbo, Bosko, Felix, Oswald and of course Mickey holding all the chips.
I hope you like it.

I love how you arranged and drew the scenery to blend in with the silent cartoon atmosphere. You even snuck in a few cameos with the background furniture. The characters were well-drawn and well-shaded too!

Sadly, the only toons to survive that era were Mickey and Felix.

What about Bimbo? He disappeared after 1934 but returned in the 80s and recently in the Dynamite comics.

I suppose, although I don't think him or even Betty could be considered that much of a household name these days. Mickey and Felix have at least done multiple things in animation over the past two decades where both Bimbo and Betty have pretty much been restricted to comics.

So I've read. Still, I'm hoping to get my hands on a copy of an issue or two someday.

Well Oswald is coming back.
Disney re-acquired the rights to him with his revival in Epic Mickey.

If you look closely, Oswald makes a cameo appearance in the Mickey Short before "Frozen" and he even appeared on the title screen as a hieroglyphic in the Mickey Mouse Short "Entombed."
With cameos like these he might get a chance to come back soon.

Thanks! Foxy is very obscure, however some people on Facebook has been listing all the characters that I should have put in there but didn't because I actually didn't know they existed. There were tons of these rubber hose creatures at the time. Very similar all of them.

Cool. Golden Age cartoon characters playing poker together. I did found out that Walter Lantz got the rights of doing the Oswald after he beats Universal founder, Carl Laemmle at a game of poker. I also found that Walter Lantz and Walt Disney met each others at this poker game where Lantz won the rights of Oswald.

Thanks for the bit of trivia. My friend told me recently that Disney got the rights for Oswald back from (whoever had them) in some weird exchange also. ABC traded some real life human sportscaster for Oswald in order to use him in Epic Mickey.

InfernoBlastFire In reply to simonwilchesc [2012-07-22 04:35:49 +0000 UTC]

Oswald was owned by NBCUniversal before Disney reclaims him on February 9, 2006. They've traded ESPN newscaster, Al Michaels to bring Oswald back. However, the Winker and Lantz Oswald cartoons are still owned by NBCUniversal, even after The Walt Disney Company got Oswald back from Universal. Only the Disney/Iwerks Oswald cartoons are now property of The Walt Disney Company. The Walt Disney Company owns 80% of ESPN after it bought ABC in 1997. The other 20% of ESPN is owned by The Hearst Corporation.

About a few sites, especially on the wikipedia of Walter Lantz. I will give you two links, one from The Golden Age Cartoons website and the other from Walter Lantz's Wikipedia.

Interesting, I never knew that. But where does it say Walt was present at the poker game? I don't see anything about that.

InfernoBlastFire In reply to Aqua-Melody101 [2012-07-11 18:38:55 +0000 UTC]

I don't really know. I found out from a YouTube user, RetroRabFan that Walt Disney was involved in this poker incident. But RetroRabFan could be wrong about Walt Disney being involved in the poker game with Walter Lantz and Carl Laemmle. Here's the YouTube page me and RetroRabFan have chatted about the poker incident. [link] It's on the second and third page on the comments.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aqua-Melody101 In reply to InfernoBlastFire [2012-07-11 18:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Um, I think you misunderstood him. He didn't say that Walt was involved in the poker game at all, he just said that they were friends and that Walt was okay with his friend taking care of Oswald for him.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

InfernoBlastFire In reply to Aqua-Melody101 [2012-07-11 19:05:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I did misread RetroRabFan's message. Walter Lantz met Walt Disney after his poker game with Universal founder Carl Laemmle and won. Oswald was kind of a gift to Walter Lantz from Walt Disney. I think Walt Disney rather have Oswald to be under Walter Lantz's hands than Charles Mintz's. Walt Disney did wrote a letter with a picture of both Oswald and Mickey together on top to Carl Laemmle on wishing him luck on the Oswald cartoons after Laemmle fired Mintz and took Oswald out of hands.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aqua-Melody101 In reply to InfernoBlastFire [2012-07-11 19:20:10 +0000 UTC]

Huh. Now that you bring that letter up, it all makes sense now. He was wishing his friend good luck with the Oswald cartoons after he obtained him in the poker game. It's great to finally hear the whole story behind it.

Yes, they were the ones that really survived over the times. Foxy is the least well known, then Bongo, the one with the little hat was very politically incorrect to go on and Bimbo was a sideshow for Betty Boop. You can youtube all of them. Great things, all too similar.
