Is SC supposed to be a professional site or just a random site? If it's supposed to be professional I highly recommend you do not use the word "shitty" in there...

What, he can't have a bit of humor in there?

I'm fine with humor, but you need to look at it at a professional standpoint. A lot of people (clients) will be turned away from you if they come across a page using vulgar language when trying to browse your Website.

If it's a personal site, and not being used for business, then by all means this is acceptable; but not if the site's purpose if business.

As far as I'm aware, it's a social website.

SimpleCandy? I was pretty sure that is his business site and Paperview.org is his social community

I like the humor... And unless you are IBM and trying to impress a bunch of old stiffs in suits, and I mean OLD, I don't think too many people would be offended, they would just laugh.

Not really... First off it's a 404 page, which is bad news for your site anyways; and then to have this sitting there doesn't help the cause.

My opinion is business based the professionalism of the industry. Vulgar language does not benefit you when handling clients, especially the 'big fish' clients.

Sadly, the professional industrial thing is a thing of the past for internet.

The internet is no longer just a place to drop in, gather data and get lost. It's a place to immerse yourself in. This is usually reflected in how websites try to invite the users more into "their own" personality and such, and identify themselves with the users.

Professionalism isn't about being stiff, polite and all, which would alienate most users when going to a site like "SimpleCandy", but rather say "Hey buddy. How's it hanging?".

Then again, it depends on the target group. But by the color scheme and all, I'd say the "professional" thing you're looking for isn't found in SimpleCandy as a whole.

But you still should not eliminate 54% of the internet. That is very poor administration, and is looked down upon by many web developers as a whole.

54% of the net? Somehow, I doubt this number. Big time.

How many times have you be hotlinked from someone else's site? If one were to have to maintain content for everything that has or will ever be produced for a website, it would not ever be worth managing a site in the first place... it kills the fun.

But in the end, one has to lighten up a bit about life and loosen the tie. I happen to own a "big fish" company in my "offtime" and do business with Fortune 500 companies, and if everything was "straight up," we would all die of burn out and boredom. Wear a suit to a business meet, but lighten up where your personality should show through. /my 2 cents

I understand how things work in the big companies as I work in one as well. My department actually is the epitome of the IT industry. Out days consist of a lot of hard work, but at the same time footballs and nerf guns can be found around everyone's desks.

In reality, 404s are a bad thing when it comes to general site linking. If something is of importance on your site you will do a 301 redirect if the page is taken down, refactored, etc. Vulgarity on something like this could easily offend someone, and you must keep in mind that not every person out there tolerates vulgarism.

Me, I honestly could care less if something said "FUCKIN SHIT FUCK!" on the page, but being a professional I am looking at it through the eyes of the vast number of people who would be disgusted by such things.
