Description
At the Haagdijk, Breda. Built in 1902 although the plot and original buildings have been there since the 14th century at least. Behind the left arched door there used to be an alleyway that housed several poorer families. Going by the city archives, they were rented out by the property owner. The house was built as a home, shop, and distillery. Some of that facade is still up, but has been changed a few times over the past century. I went into the archives and dug up the original building plans to reconstruct what it would looked liked when it was new. The buildings beside it were drawn up from an early 1900 postcard, and a few photographs from the 50s (before the "great renovation").
I did do research on the more commonly used paint colours, but since this building is really never on any pictures, I was forced to wing it. I used its current colourscheme of white and old green, which is common for this area.
Pen and wash done with India ink, a dip pen, and Royal Talens van Gogh watercolours.
