Description All you ever seem to hear today is the bad things about our military. Yes we are fighting in Iraq, but soldiers are doing so many other great things around the world. The children here in Kosovo look up to us, we represent America. Something as simple as a soldier sitting down or playing with a child, or giving them a friendly hand shake or a hug can make such an impact on his or her future. I think this photo has a lot of meaning in it.

I really like this picture, and I completely agree with what you said about our soldiers. I feel like people ignore all the good things they do and just see them as 'bad' people when really they should respect and appreciate everything they go through to do for us. But either way, I really like the picture, nice job

YES!!!!! THIS is the truth about our troops, it's heart warming the photos of them with Iraqi children. The looks of awe and love in the little girls and boys faces is amazing. We are fighting to make it where those children can grow up to be what they want to, and not live in terror of being tortured or killed by terrorists. This is a wonderful photograph, excellent job

A soldier who is "sitting down or playing with a child" is not doing the job of a soldier.

You see a lot of criticism about military presence in Iraq because people wonder whether this "war on terrorism" really has any substance. Do you think soldiers are there to sit down and play with children? They're there to represent America with bullets, not smiles. And even if soldiers did take time to sit down and speak with the children, what makes you think they're qualified to do so? Wouldn't doctors/teachers/public service officials be more appropriate?

Your photo did make me think, though, even if I came to a different conclusion than you intended.

I guess you know my job better than me. I guess my division 10th Mountain has it all wrong. A few quick question have you ever seen an Iraqi/Afgan kid in person? Have you ever kicked a ball around with them? Do you know what soldiers even do when they are deployed? I'm not trying to be a dick but before you make assumption have experience in the field first, that doesn't include media, or the internet.
Because The villages we played with, talked to, help build(I pretty sure Construction isn't in the job description of a 19D)Those were the villages that had feasts for us, Helped us when ever they could However they could, the villages we didn't "have fun with" were the ones trying to kill us.

The words of ignorance...

I appreciate your comment, but honestly you have no idea what your talking about...

Sometimes the simple things, such as a soldier taking the time to sit down and talk with a child, can have a much greater impact on the future of a world filled with hate and violence than kicking in doors and dropping bombs.

Wow, Seriously.
She gave you a picture and her point of view to look at it.
By saying everything you said, you totally lost my respect.
Not doing the job of a soldier ? Soldiers aren't just there to shoot at what ever they see, you know. Just like you and me they are human, human got emotions, feelings, everything that someone else has. And to represent america with bullets ? Really ? I mean, come on, you may say everything as a fact, but what i see, Its just meaningless, really.

Soldiers are people, and people can create miracles just by doing as the picture shows.

I think that soldiers are the most bravest and amazing people. I really think that the Converse show a more soft side to it, like a childish friendship between the soldier and the kid. (I'm sorry I just love to give things a story) And a side comment on your coment, I'm from Canada and I hear a lot of bad things about your military too. I'm not so sure what my own opinion should be, however I believe that in every terrible thing (such as war) there is still a glimer of something good, though it could be small I think it is turely bigger than us all.

I truly love the message you are sending with this photo. My boyfriend is a soldier and will possibly be deploying next year. It truly touches my heart to see what the men and women of our military are doing in order to keep us safe! Out of all the photos that I've seen on DA, this one by far is my absolute favorite! I have much respect for you through this piece. Its good to see someone out there with an open mind, rather than what I heard the other day " You'd be fuckin' stupid to join the army... Get shot at, blown up and do the same to others..soldiers are just dickheads who couldn't get a job."

I almost decked him. I would have too if he wasnt my boss.

Good piece man, I just hope atleast some people continue to harbour open minds.

This photograph has changed me. I keep seeing recruiters coming to my highschool and I get upset because I feel like they're trying to encourage young men to put themselves in danger. But something about this photograph lifted that frustration and sadness off my chest. I feel like I can see the friendly smile the soldier has on his face as he tells the little boy next to him about what he liked to do after school. It's just so beautiful to me, and I'm really happy to have my heart lightened by this photo. It reminds me that they were all children once, and even though they are willing to die for people they don't even know, they still have that boy inside that still wants to play.

It's unfortunate that most people's attention are always drawn towards the negative aspects of everything. Shit like the news are always reporting about fighting and abuses and that gives people the impression that the military is nothing but trouble. Those sitting at home watching their tv's and enjoying their freedom tend to forget about the people who have died to bring them that freedom. And those very same sort of people are also still out in the world today bringing hope to those who need it.

Very powerful and touching photo, keep up the good work.

Thank you very much. I'm happy to know you appreciate what we are doing here. When I set out to take this picture; I wanted to show the emotions, and connection between the children and the soldiers here, but in away most people would'nt see it.

You asked where I'm at in Kosovo. Our Base is near Urosevac in East Kosovo.
