Yes, that's another possible version. In fact such conflict could be a good idea for an episode - Fluttershy meeting parents and trying not to disappoint them etc.
Btw as I know, Fluttershy's father is most commonly portrayed by fans as caring and overprotective guy or as mean, abusive jerk.

Or perhaps (going to make a reference here), if you've ever seen the show "Futurama", the main female protagonist's parents (who are awkward and feel unworthy of her) are sort of how I could imagine Fluttershy's parents to be.
