"I'll be waiting for you at the finish line." Mello said as he left. Near ignored the feeling that he would never see him again, doubting his own intuition.
Then that fateful day, he had to hide his anger, pain and sorrow until he was off the phone with L-Kira... Why did Mello have to die? Why did Near not press his wish for Mello to work WITH him instead of being rivals until the end? Wasn't that why he was searching for him for four years? Regret tore at his heart like a claw, bitter and cruel.
And Matt...Near hadn't even known when he'd left the orphanage. To think that he would see him again dead on the news, gunned down in a car he was using to distract the guards so Mello could abduct Takada...
Where, exactly, is the "finish line"? And would Mello still be waiting for him when he reached it, Matt by his side as always?

I like how Matt and Mello's backs are turned towards Near, it's kind of symbolic of how they took such a different direction than him, and how they are never going to see him agian, if that makes sense.
