Description
I tried to draw a pattern for my cloak - I usually sew without any patterns. I used 1,5 m x 3,6 m textile. If you have any questions just ask in the comments.-- update --
After soo many favs and comments and views, mevanna.deviantart.com/ finally sent me her version - check it out, its awesome (better than mine)! Come on everyone, send me your photos, I am very happy that I inspire such beauties.

*After looking at it for a while trying to figure out how to make the hood detachable*
...Wait, is the hood like a mantle-type thing, where it's a whole separate layer? That would make a lot more sense than what I was thinking. If so, that is ingenious and completely solves my "hood or no hood" problems I have with coats...
This is absolutely gorgeous, and it looks fantastic made in wool! I really must make one, but I have no wool laying around... Perhaps a synthetic will work...

Thanks! Yep, the hood is a totally separate piece, sometimes when its not that cold and not snowing, I even leave it home. I did not take a picture with only the hood because it would look silly
Maybe look at the cloak where I get the idea from, it shows better there:

The 'official' one is much nicer, but I did not have 800$ for a coat, and the wool material for this was about 60$. I spent about two days doing it, but it was more than worth it.

Ooh, that *is* super-pretty! Although I think yours looks a little more practical/easier to move in. But ah ha ha yeah, $800 is kind of expensive. Though after making stuff to sell, and also doing as much of the fabric making/dyeing process as I can, I can see why really nice things are expensive!
Dang, I really need some wool. The wool at my local Jo-Ann store sucks >.< I'll be ordering some nice wool online when I can. In the meantime, I may make this out of a different fabric, both as a mock-up and as a lighter jacket whilst I wait for my things to sell so I can have a wool one

I really think that coat is worth that money, its just that I dont have that much However I love browsing armstreet, they have great stuff, very inspirative. This is my new love, I just have to figure out a character that would wear this: armstreet.com/store/clothes/dr…
I guess I am lucky here in Hungary: there is a great textile store, right across the street where I live, and they sell this wool material for 3.000 HUF (about 15$) per meter. I already bought some black ones for another coat, but that will be a proper winter coat not fantasy stlye .

Oh, that coat is totally worth it! But dang that's a lot of money, and I'd be so afraid of getting it dirty!
And OHMYGOODNESS that dress is amazing. I really, really love that!
Haha yes, I do hear that over in your corner of the world wool fabric is much easier to come by I went to my fabric store three towns away, and their wool fabric is something like $30/yd, only 3 colours, and not very good quality fabric >.<
Ooh, I can't wait to see your new coat
I think I'm going to start work on a winter cloak soon, I hardly wear coats but I love shawls, blankets, and my BF's cloak (but it is way, WAY too big for me, LOL).

i have a question. the top arm part and the bottom arm part do you cut them out like it is in the pic or do you cut them separate????

Sindeon In reply to blackfairy1326 [2013-08-21 07:34:04 +0000 UTC]
No, its separated, but laying it out on the fabric like this helps you spare with the textile.

The measurements are on the drawing - I have not really measured the pieces just started cutting
The material is wool and fake fur edging.

This looks downright cuddlable!
I might give this a try for a friend of mine who's always cold and make a male variant while at it! (With proper credits )

Its really not that hard to do! But I have no idea how you will turn it into male, if you can do that please show me!

A little less emphasis on the waist, just straighten it out a bit, and make some edges a little 'harder', and use some darker fabrics.
Voila, elven nobleman, which turns a bit more androgynous! ^^

When you sew without a pattern, do you generally make a muslin practice version first? I am curious what your process is, since the final piece is fitted beautifully.

I use tracing paper - I hand-draw the pieces on a roll of tracing paper (being an architect, I always have lots of those at home, but it is reallly cheap compared to any textile). If I make it for someone else, I usually ask for their T-shirt or sweather to get the size of the shoulder, arms, etc. For myself its easy, I already know how big pieces I need. Then I use needles to put together a paper-prototype. Its hard to wear (the paper doesnt fold very well), but really easy to re-adjust with a scissor, and moving around the needles as necessary. Then I put the tracing paper pieces on the textile. After that I usually just throw away the paper pattern, because they are never perfect (i dont bother with length, or nice cut edges or anything).
