This is much better than the other lightning effects I have tried, and although it is a little more work, it definitely worth the effort...thank you also for the clear instructions.

I'm having a little bit of a problem.
After I fade it, the glow somehow seperates from the line, even though they are on the same layer. So, after I repeat and fade the wave all those times, I have this: [link]
What is wrong? I'm using Photoshop CS2, instead of PS7, but would that make the difference?

Nevermind. I found out what it was. I had faded after the first one. -shakes head-
Here is what I got after finally figuring out what to do: (I also hit randomize for every wave, I like the result) [link]

Thank you! I tried to get that gorgeous glow you had on yours, but couldn't quite get it to work.

all right, I have a question. hopefully it hasn't already been asked.
I used the settings you have (just for the first time, so that I know it should work right), except whenever I duplicate the wave (by pressing CTRL + F for repeating the filter), the new wave is way off of the other. should I be doing something different?

Th-that's it! Upon random chance, that is IT! That's the random Tesla-coil effect lightning-ish thing I need for the picture I'm working on! MIRACLES DO HAPPEN!

"make sure the line with glow is in the same layer and in a layer of its own"
this makes no sense.....really poorly written tutorial
π: 0 β©: 1
Tiberius47 In reply to bobjim [2006-07-02 06:07:01 +0000 UTC]
it means that the glowing streams have to be in their own layer (the line and the glow should both be in the same layer as each other), but that layer should be a layer just for the glowing streams, create a new layer just for it.

Instead of
Type: Sine
try:
Type: Triangle, to get a better lightning effect (more angular, not so smooth lines)
Nice tut, dude!
