Description So, I've been recently getting into comics again. Dorky, I know. But what can I say? Make Mine Marvel.

This is my favorite villain from ANY comic, Carnage, or Cletus Kasady, at least my rendition of him. A friend said he didn't look like the serial killer he was supposed to be, but looked like a boy scout instead. Oh well, who said evil couldn't be cute.

Anyway, this gave me a good opportunity to try out my new red ink. Unfortunately the scanner I used completely ruined the image.

Your welcome, any time.

Yeah, I'm all about Ultimate Spider-man, it always seems a bit more real to me. Although I haven't been reading it because of school lately. Or drawing. I'll improve someday.

I think the Ultimate art is very good considering the art in the other Ultimate lines *cough*X-Mensucks*cough*. But some of the ways their trying to "modernize" it, is just ruining the story line. For instance, the story about the black suit/symbiote and the clone saga (which sucked to begin with), but would it have killed them to recreate the Secret Wars and have a NORMAL Ben Reilly and Jessica Drew. You can tell I've been waiting to vent this to someone. Sorry it had to be you, I figured you'd be a little understanding.

Well, I understood why they went with the genetic route for the symbiote (although, having it come from space by a meteor like in Spider-man 3 would've been more appropriate) and was totally fine with the Venom arc just because I think the emotion behind it all was great, the downpour during the fight made it really memorable. What I didn't like about it is that although they did a good job making Venom himself frightening, and he has much better motivations and all (actually being a villain now), he was too big and really didn't resemble Spider-man enough. After all, he's supposed to be Spidey's doppelganger, shouldn't he resemble Spidey more instead of a big black amorphous beast? You can get rid of the white spider-symbol, but at least make him about the same size. Ultimate Carnage was disturbing in general (fetus made of blood, anyone?) so I accepted it despite the changes. But you're totally right about Ben Reilly and Jessica Drew. Jessica Drew being a clone of Peter (I think that's what happened, haven't read the Clone Saga yet) is sort of creepy in a way...seeing as she's basically Peter with girl parts. And Ben Reilly...well...should be a name reserved for a male clone of Peter Parker. The scientist in Ultimate is a good character, but...just give him a new name, instead of blowing up the chances of a true Reilly.

Don't apologize. It's rare to find other (normal) people who read comic books, so I'm glad to discuss it.

I'd have to agree with you of their depiction of Venom. He was intended to be just a larger version of Peter Parker, also including tongue, teeth, slime and all. I actually haven't read the scene you're describing (I kind of jump around in the series), but I've seen pictures of him. Another character whose outfit should've stayed the same was Black Cat; I detest her new facemask, it looks completely ridiculous. Do you happen to know whether there's even a romance between her and Spider-man? Ah, yes, the Carnage fetus. It wouldn't have been quite so bad if they just hadn't named it Carnage, because it isn't. It's just goop. I really can't say much for Ultimate, since I only have a few scattered comics (most of which I collect is 80s and 90s), but the writing is still excellent and the art leaves nothing to be desired.

I think I liked the facemask only because it was another step away from Catwoman - there's just too much in common between the two. Although Black Cat always showed a lot more skin, so I'm not complaining about her costume. She was absolutely all over Spider-man in Ultimate, but after a while, when Peter took off his mask to finally kiss her, and she realized he was only 15/16, she threw up directly into his lap. The date was pretty much over.

That's the whole reason I got into comics...the art. I can't imagine how much work goes into each issue, and they're only sold for about 2-3 dollars. Some of them are fully painted, too. Panel by panel.

I actually thought it made her look more like Catwoman, because now she's got the little ears as well. I've actually never compared the two, since I'm not much of a DC fan. But you do have a point, they are very similar.

At least the Black Cat/Spider-man relationship stayed the same. Since she was only in love with Spider-man and not Peter Parker.

I know, it's crazy the amount of work that goes into just one comic. But if they were any more expensive, less people would buy them. Have you ever considered working for Marvel or another comic line?

It'd be a dream come true to work for Marvel or any other comic company, but I'm nowhere near the level of skill that would be required. I've seen amazing artists get turned down by them.

And I've seen terrible artists actually published by them. You never know until you try. If you ever get a chance to go to a com fair, put together a portfolio and show it around. Who knows? You may end up drawing for Ultimate Spider-man. You certainly have the talent.

Haha, I appreciate it, and I'm very flattered, but it won't happen until I work out the kinks in my art. Give me a year or two first! :-D To be rather honest, I think you'd do a better job.

Ha, right. Tell me this, how many women artists do you see drawing for Marvel or any comic line for that matter? Unfortunately, women are often overlooked, despite any talent they may posses. But I do hope to someday see you draw for Spider-man; it's always worthwhile to pursue an occupation that would you would enjoy waking up to.
