Description
"The Adventures of Pinocchio" was written by Carlo Collodi in 1883, the titular character was a wooden puppet who wanted to become a real boy. However, without the rose-coloured Disney lens that most people are used to wearing when looking upon these fairy tales, Pinocchio is, in fact, a monster of a child that no sane parent would want to have around. The author called him a "rascal," "imp," "scapegrace," "disgrace," "ragamuffin," and a "confirmed rogue." He was a perpetual and pathological liar who took on no responsibilities. And the moment he was born, he laughed derisively in the face of his creator and promptly stole the old man's wig. Most of these features would be considered as a form of psychopathy. Pinocchio is selfish, egotistical, and impulsive. He may be superficially charming, but he would take no advise from anyone (he killed the kindly Jiminy Cricket in the original novel.) As an pathological liar, we were lucky that his nose grew to signal his falsehoods. The moment he -actually- turned into a boy and lost the extend-o-nose lie detector... we were all in bigger trouble than we thought. Pinocchio, then, would be the very first (and a very good) reason for young children to fear their puppets, dolls and other inanimate humanoids.
Artist's Note:
1. Completed over 2 days. Pencil, Sharpie marker, medium point roller ball pen.
2. Scanned and contrast corrected by Photoshop CS4.
3. Strathmore Drawing Paper, Series 300, 70lbs (114gsm)
4. Produced for for their "Longest Night" campaign. More information here: fav.me/d8rpraq
5. The design of Pinocchio here is modified after the Disney design instead of the original book description. This would qualify this picture as a "fanart" of the Disney version. One heck of an anti-fanart, I guess...

This is so cute. But the style makes it seem like something sinister is about to go down.

That's the whole point, my friend.
Pinocchio has been bleached by the Disney dream-machine to be cute and cuddly. The original is a lot more... er... sinister...

This is a part of a series that was meant to skirt the edge of being unsettling. If you find it somewhat macabre, that's the whole point!
Very glad to hear that you liked it. Much appreciated!
