i feel like if simon and marceline were around a similar age and they didn't have the problem of him forgetting his past they could be great together. simon was so protective but i think he could only see her in kind of " we're only friends" and "it'll be weird" kind of sense since in one of the episodes for a brief moment he was making tapes about his findings to his partner (or someone else) i love their friendship though and i wish they'd show more of it

simon and marcy are already great the way they are so it's okay if you don't ship them this way! but what makes the relationship between these two even greater is that there are several different ways you can see them and love them.

Wait. When did people start shipping this? Before "I Remember You", I don't think there was any real group following and afterwards, there still didn't seem to be one (in terms of shipping). On top of that, bringing up shipping after IRY tended to lead to negative replies ("he's like her dad" or "pedo" style posts).

I'll tell you what I know. I only started openly shipping it after I saw a post on Tumblr saying, "Okay, so is the Adventure Time fandom scared of shipping simon and marcy just because they're afraid of being judged or something? etc etc" and people started giving their secret headcanons which made the ship look beautiful and dark at the same time in a deep psychological sort of way which pretty much won me over.
However DA apparently beat Tumblr to it, so I'd like to know the answer to your question, too.
