Description (Invisible)
7/31/2010

When did (I) become
invisible?
(I) work and plan
and smile and sing
but no one sees (me),
no one hears.

They look right past (me),
no matter what (I) wear,
no matter what (I) do,
no matter what (I) say.
So why
do (I) keep working,
day after day?

Perhaps they see
the work (I) do
but no one sees it happen,
even if they're there.

And when it's done,
no one says "good job"
no one says "thanks for all you do"

(I) don't need praise
nor adoration,
but it's nice to know?
(I) am not invisible.

The use of parenthesis does work well for this. Besides their symbolic use, the visual that is created is good. The subject huddled on itself almost, hidden on both sides.

The last few lines, "(I) don't need praise, nor adoration / but it's nice to know?". That sums it up perfectly. I always feel like I don't deserve praise, I feel uncomfortable when people do recognize me and I don't like being noticed, yet sometimes you want that, it's nice to hear anyway even though you don't really need it. The use of a question mark there is interesting, the uncertainty in that statement.

That's exactly it, on both parts.

I hate being singled out and recognized, but a simple thank you can motivate me beyond reason...

Question mark, honestly, might be a typo... And it is, lol. But as a whole, this poem is uncertain...

Bah, I like the typo!

I always feel like I haven't really done anything to be recognized, and I don't want people to think I was just being an arrogant fool if I play along with any praise or thank you's. It's like if I deny it the whole time, when they find out how much of a lie it all was it will be less worse....

Heh, when people thank me, I blush and tell them that it was nothing.

It's not so much the need for praise or the expectation of it... It's that they notice...! I don't brag on myself, I don't enjoy being singled out for almost anything. But I do a lot of good, and it's helpful that people notice enough to just give me a smile and say thanks...

Yeah, it's nice to know that it's appreciated, even just a little. I get that. I used to volunteer a lot myself as well, I need to get back into it.
