Description
The Race
The sun was set high on the bright sky, burning the red sed bellow them, when he heard a loud bark, it was the call for the dogs to start racing up the spine. To race back to the place he had just left seemed senseless, but it seemed like it was the only was for him to enter the city as a citizen.
Tossing the sand behind him, Bayek darted to the front. He could see himself being easily raced by other dogs, descendants of sight hounds, no wonder they were so fast. He knew from experience it was no use trying to race a dog that had long legs and a light body, however, he had strength and stamina on his side, something “fragile” dogs of that kind would not have.
As soon as the sun began to set, Bayek reach the top of mountain, easily finding his way between canyons and rocks. Bayek had grown climbing that mountain, and it was not now that his experience would fail him.
Upon finding the ribbon, Bayek wrapped it around his wrist, taking lots of turns to make sure it wouldn’t be lost as he ran down the mountain.
The Bishop had been very clear, as to how complete the trial, despite Bayek’s inattention he had heard it when he explained the contestants would have to hunt an animal of the desert and immediately the name “Caracal” called his attention.
A few months previous to the trial, Bayek’s hunt had been ruined by a Caracal who surprised the herd. Now it seemed the perfect time to give the animal a taste of karma, as his mother liked to call it.
The young male ran down the mountain, searching around the small rocks for any sign of the Caracal, until he caught the faint scene of urine on one of the rocks. The animal was close.
Bayek quickly caught the trail of the caracal until he saw in the distance another dog the same caracal he had been trailing in between his teeth. Bayek had been too slow.
The clock was ticking, with the time lost chasing a dead Caracal Bayek decided to camp on the mountain’s bottom for the night, it was getting dark and by then he should start trying to recover his strength as he used the time to calculate a new plan.
The New Plan
Sheep.
He had tried to avoid the easiest prey, but it seemed like the fast option by that time.
Bayek had hunted sheeps all his life, in his mind he could easily remember his complains about the same choice of food for the family. But now, it’d be the prey to save his hope.
As the sun rose on the horizon, the mutt ran up the mountain again, until he saw a small herd of Bighorn Rams. At the sight he licked his lips, hearing his stomach roar in hunger.
Impatiently, Bayek quickly approached a female, locking his jaw into her leg as he attempted to drag her away from the herd. His attempt was, somewhat, successful. For as he pulled the sheep, it stumbled and fell down a few meters from the rock formation, obviously dying.
Luck had finally smiled at him, Bayek quickly raced down the rocks, reaching for the sheep almost as big as him.
As he looked at the sheep he quickly realized It’d be incredibly hard to drag the hole body down the mountain, still, he didn’t have any options left.
The male grabbed the legs the sheep and began to make his way back to the city. The body was as heavy as his own, it’d take him a few days until he reached the city gates once again.
The path was harsh, despite being known by him from the recent journey, things seemed to feel harder as he struggled with hunger and exhaustion. It has been a few days when he finally saw the city in the distance, at an early sunny morning his breath was of relief.
The few steps to the finish line seemed to be the hardest as he carried the (almost rotten) sheep, surrounded by flies.
Making his way to the temple, Bayek found himself choosing the bone, as his stomach growled louder, maybe the bone would relieve a bit of his hunger until he could find better food.
