the first sophont's resemble cephalopods, are tripods with four limbs for manipulation and are surprisingly socially similar to us given their alien looks.  the space-faring descendants are not too distinct for their ancestors, manly becoming smaller and more nimble due to living parts of there life in space. Artificial enhancement through genetic engineering and robotics has enabled them to thrive in harsh conditions and was the driver behind what made them a new species.
