Hey, her face is really cute and adorable I like how the glasses and the book here changed air from her ref sheet and l like this character already. Unconsciously, I am attracted to gray (okay, her hair is actually white) as I had picked gray kitten Nabi among the litter. The size of her shoulder looks good. I like using a candle here. Although I think the background or shadows should be bit darker with one candle light. But not so bad. I think the candle here is blurred too much since it is a good featured object in this drawing.
I only use few functions with Photoshop so not a person to talk about it in front of you. But about the line art, couldn't you have used image/adjustments/threshold to delete the dark gray? I use the function to delete the real life shadows on the white sketchbook background, which my camera picks up.
And what is the purpose of dark gray in the background layer?

Thank you, I'm glad you like her It was fun trying to get the warm candlelight to work with the dark environment, I figured she'd be in a dark room but somehow I made it look like she was outside in the night sky. Yeah I like to go over board with the blurs to create a fake depth illusion so I couldn't help myself with the candle
Hmm I've never used the threshold function until now, though from what I've seen it does it turns the dark grey fills to white which seems to get rid of it but when I start adding colour under the sketch the white fill stills gets in the way. It's still a handy tool though, I'll probably end up using it now for other stuff.
And the dark grey background is just better for colouring. If I colour outside the line art with light colours it isn't very noticable against a white background. It's also good for painting values when drawing backgrounds and scenery rather than painting straight from white being the highest value.
Though you aren't actually supposed to make the background dark before you do the sketch/lineart, that was just me being a dummy

You are welcome! Yeah, the dark blue color seems to make it look like it is night sky outside. Hmm, I might use dark blue than gray for a night forest drawing. If you don't mind, I have some similar themed drawings in my faved folder. reading under a candlelight ; eye glassed girl reading .
Can you save at the stage when the dark gray fills are erased then reload it before you start coloring it? I just used it for a last touching up when there should be only black and white so I am not sure.
It seems like a pretty nifty technique.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the error in the lineart? I really like the style either way

I've uploaded it here to show it visually sta.sh/0et75kqehza
Basically when I went to draw the initial sketch, I accidentally drew it on the background layer which was coloured in a dark grey fill. Normally this wouldn't be a problem since I was gonna go over it with line art anyway but I really liked the messy sketch better, only I wouldn't be able to colour it if I went with that.
So I proceeded to use the wand select tool to manually delete all the grey fill in between the lines of the sketch (which took forever). I eventually realised I was never gonna get rid of all the grey fills so when I gave up, I ended up with a kinda interesting looking sketch that reminded me of blotchy and messy ink. I was gonna go for a messy look anyway so I just went with that :3
Glad you like how it turned out

I was really trying for a messy style for a change, and when I saw the first comment described it as 'neat' it cracked me up
