Hi Pamela - Back to view this properly. This is a much more formal image with high level symmetry and a predominantly yellow/gold (to my eyes) palette. My initial reaction was that the image was of the vaulting in the roof of a cathedral or similar (mosques have highly geometrical decoration), with high arches and cupolas, and, overall the image does convey height. Close inspection shows the detailed geometry of circles, elliptical egg shapes, squares, trapezoids, triangles, hexagons - most with degrees of distortion. The variations in size of these geometrical figures adds to the feeling of height but also lends flow across the image as well as up and down arches. The eye is constantly on the move. Two other features appear upon scrutiny. First, there is a "hidden" structure behind the main geometry, almost as if this immediate structure is slightly transparent. Second, there are patches of light, asymmetrically placed, adding to the 3D feeling. Given the detail, I'm not surprised that there was a long render time involved.
By chance, yesterday, I posted a short essay on the concept of contrast in image making as put forward by a famous artist, designer and teacher, Johannes Itten [link] I would have included this image in that post, had it been available, as it illustrates some of the points in the essay. There are contrasts between line and volume, large and small, light and dark, round and straight, near and far.
Overall, an extraordinary piece of work.
Cheers
David

As always, I really appreciate your feedback.I have done a couple of these but need to render them properly first before I post - probably early next week. I really enjoyed this tutorial and have had a huge amount of fun with these images.
As usual, the end result is sheer chance - the ground plane reflection provides the interesting lighting that adds to the overall effect of the image.
I have saved your essay so that I can read it later, but it looks very instructive and interesting.
Thank you again for your time and input.
Cheers
Pamela

I'm going to have to study that tutorial in detail, Pamela - when I get time. One point that we've discussed before, but it is something that I feel you are being unfair to yourself about. You say the end result is sheer chance. I one way this is true, but it is you who see this image out of all of the virtual reality world in which it exists. Ansel Adams, to pick one famous photographer, created some of the most prized photographs of the natural world, but he too found these images by walking about in the real world. He spotted them and captured them. You could say that it was only pure chance that he happened by just before he took some astonishing panorama of clouds and mountains. But the point was that he saw those things, chance or no. You walk about and see in the virtual world, chance or no.
Cheers
