A truly awe-inspiring piece of work. Keeping the background simple and uncluttered allows us to focus on the event at hand. Despite the destruction and violent impact the image still has an overall quality of calmness, which I love. Brilliant detail in a simple but expertly executed scene. Well done!

My God that's amazing. As soon as I get enough money I am buying that on enormous canvas... I read about that in New Scientist, the idea of a small Mars-sized planet throwing itself out of orbit and slamming into earth... that's exactly how I imagined it. I love the cracks on the smaller planet, fantastic.

How could that be how the Earth was formed if there was no Earth for anything to crash into? Established theory is that Earth gradually accreted out of the solar nebula . See History of Earth . Yes things formed clumps, but only tiny rocks gently falling together over millions of years, not massive (spherical, I might add) lumps colliding like this.
It is, however, one (dominant) theory about how the Moon was formed - which is what I was referring to in the original comment. It's called the giant impact hypothesis , the 'Mars-sized planet' is called Theia, and it's estimated that it happened rather like this .

What I really like about this one is the unique highlight around the planets edge, it gives it a very nice feeling. The other celestial art is just an added bonus
