I was enjoying Vorropohaiah's thread - Atlas Elyden over at the Cartography Guild website and the topic of doing caterpillar style ridges came up. Doing them by hand takes a long time so I thought I'd try to help out there and made some brushes for that. They simulate the look but time will tell if they are completely satisfactory. They were done in PS cs5 so probably not backward compatible, though I'm not sure on that one. Here's my original thread for the brushes - www.cartographersguild.com/map…License info
These brushes can be used in personal and commercial maps. They are not to be distributed or rebundled with other brushes for distribution elsewhere. If they are used in a commercial map/work it would be nice to get a credit and/or a link back to this page so others could access them.
I have been told that these can be loaded into GIMP if it is version 2.4 or later. So that's cool.
Also, if you use them I would love to see what you did with them. A link in the comments here would work.

Ich denke ich werde sie mal austesten und schauen. Mir gefällt die Verwendbarkeit und die Vereinfachung die sie mitbringen, gleichzeitig bin ich aber noch nicht sicher ob sie genug Zufälligkeit im Strich generieren um vernünftig auszusehen und nicht eintönig. Aber ich mag die Idee sehr, auch dass du sie teilst. Ggf. mache ich eigene und schaue dann einfach mal ob ich sie auch uppe
Btw, ich würde an deiner STelle auch auf Strichstärke der Strichlein achten und die Settings für den Brush richtungsorientiert anlegen. So musst du einen Pfad zwar rechts und links abfahren mit dem Pinsel, aber du kannst variierende Breiten bei den Wegen nutzen und auch andere Formen schneller generieren, ohne dabei die Strichdicke der einzelnen Strichlein zu ändern.

Irgs, I'm very sorry... I somehow thought you were from Germany - I guess I mixed you up with someone else. Let me translate:
'I think I will try them out and look how they work for me. I especially like the usability and simplification the brushes bring, but at the same time I'm not sure about the randomness in the small strokes they generate to look good and not to plain. Over all I like the idea and you sharing this content. Maybe I'll make up my own and (if they work well) I'll upload them, too.
Btw, if I were you I'd try to split the two lines in the stroke. This has the advantage that you can variate the thickness of paths and other stuff, the disadvantage however would be that you have to draw the two sides separately. This would aso let you get rid of the smaller lines in the stroke and therefore look more like one single thickness of the stylus used. You can use 'fallow path' in the stroke settings so you only need one brush (and it alternates whith you drawing from up/down and left/right, depending on the direction you are starting the line).'

The person I was originally making them for wanted a bit of uneven-ness to them. They wanted a hand drawn look but with a brush that would make it easier and faster for them.
I did make a few that were one sided so you could do more variable stuff, like rounder mountains and such.
It is hard to make a brush that repeats and still has a random natural look to it.
Play with them and see what you think. This was just a quick attempt to help out a fellow cartographer.
