Description from pencil sketch to PS for some texture and color, plus some text

This map was another test of some concepts, mainly a more aged look but also for some ink and water color effects plus some burn holes and such.
This was the second attempt and feels fairly well aged. The notes on the page are from Naelis' scribe, written for the captains that used the map.
Thendrais was largely unknown to them at the time of these voyages.

Other bits.... [first is the original pencil sketch]

Thanks Timo

It was an interesting one to do.

I liked the old ink, but was most satisfied with the old worn paper.

That really came out well.

A few questions about this deviation I hope to get answered:

1. How did you come up with the name for these islands and the country as a whole?

2. Is there a larger map out there, that includes this region?

3. May I use this deviation as a basis for roleplaying and possibly write my own lore for Thendrais?

Now, excuse me while I go surfing, trying to find a good up-to-date tutorial on mapmaking with Inkscape. Or Inkscape in general.

1. I don't have a formal naming method.

I just sort of wing it. I do make efforts to try to make names seem similar-ish.

2. As yet, no. This location if in the world of Nhyn.

I haven't completed a world map for Nhyn, though I have been working on one.

I've really only partially mapped the world of Nhyn, so some of the locations are still not fixed.

3. I am going to say no, but for some good reasons...

First is that it is from a story world of my own, and I do plan to do more with the world.

But second, and most important, is that it will be better for you over all and in the long run to base your work on a place of your own.

For one, i think you would be more satisfied later, but also it will be entirely yours.

And you would retain all of the intellectual property rights to a place you create.

That's a huge thing down the road. You don't want your time and effort tied to someone else's IP.

If you want help with crafting a location, the Cartographer's Guild is the best place.

www.cartographersguild.com/con…

I'm over there as are a ton of friendly, helpful, informative mapmakers and world builders.

There are loads of tutorials for all sorts of map styles and map software.

As a note, this was done in photoshop [raster graphic] and Inkscape is vector.

Not saying you can't make a great map in inkscape. It's just easier to do texturing in a raster program.

I wrote an article on some low cost and free options... actually, i wrote 2..

Article 1 - www.cartographersguild.com/con…

Article 2 - www.cartographersguild.com/con…

Depending on your OS, there are good options.

Beautiful and intriguing map. I love all the bits of story/notes around... gives it a good depth you can really sink into with the imagination, and the style is really pleasing to explore with the eyes. Nice map, John.
