It'd be much better to have Spencer in James' place in the 22nd season episode titled "Apology Impossible". Because Spencer is more snobby and rude to the other engines and refused to apologize to poor Phillip after getting him dirty, taking his turn at the washdown overtaking him at the signal points. James had enough of Spencer's attitude and demand him to apologize to Phillip for his selfish behavior while standing up for Phillip. James remembered that Phillip had saved him from falling off the bridge. So, he's returning the favor for his new friend. After James demanded Spencer to apologize, Phillip was happy with James for standing up for him. The two friends head back to Knapford Yards.
