Description
Throughout the years, various flags have been proposed and introduced to Congress and the Senate. Some with more support than others. However it was during the 1912 Flag Referendum did the creativity and design process of much of the nation come to light. While the Flag Referendum ultimately never came to pass- (with only half of Congress agreeing on its approval) these flags carry much symbolism and it would be interesting to think of a world with a different flag for the Union.A1- The Starless Banner- created as simplified version of the flag (which at the time only had 74 stars), as a way to show off the 'important' features of the flag. Namely the stripes and the colors. This flag has and would be used extensively throughout the Union before and after 1912- particularly on Indian reservations, overseas territories, and other non-state areas as a way to show American sovereignty, but without actually being part of a state.
B1- Starless Banner Design 2- an alternative design for A1
C1- Stars and Bars 3
D1- States over Stripes- made by Thomas E Watson, famous states rights activist, and argued that the states should not only have greater prominence in politics, but also in symbolism.
E1- Revolutionary Solidarity- created by Sir Daniel Hunter McMillian of Winnipeg, it was created with the origins of the US in mind- paying tribute to both the American and Canadian revolutionaries from the American Revolution.
A2- Bars and Stripes- created by George Washington Custis Lee- heir of renowned Union general Robert E. Lee, wanted to pay homage to his family as well as "make a flag with a symbol of true patriots".
B2- Stars and Bars- also created by Custis Lee, the bars are meant to represent life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
C2- Stars and Bars 2
D2- Liberty Bell Banner- The bell represents liberty, and the 10 stars surrounding it represent the original 10 amendments, interestingly the creator was Constitutionalist speaker, Theodore Roosevelt- governor of New York.
E2- Cross and Stripes- created by the CAA, constantly seen with CAA households, businesses, or rallies.
A3- "Railroad" Banner- made by a Southerner who surprisingly had similar ideas to Cutis.
B3- 'Tall' Blue Banner- made as a way to accommodate the extra states without it being cramped in the canton.
C3- The "Futurism Banner"- the newly created College Arts Association promoted a a new banner to emphasize an "America of the future".
D3- States over Stripes- also made by the Populist Party.
E3- Tribute to Fathers Flag- Made as tribute to the founder of the USA- George Washington. Also pays tribute to the original 9 Founding Fathers- 7 from the Thirteen Colonies and 2 from the Dominion of Canada.
A4- Alternate Colors 1- Alternate color design.
B4- Alternate "Tall Blue" Colors 1
C4- 8 Pointed Star/Fredonian Banner- made by William D. Coleman- 5th governor of the Douala Territory, it was meant to show Fredonia and the Union as equals. The star represents all states of the US- the 4 smaller stars represent the 4 territories in Fredonia.
D4- Bonnie Blue- the flag focuses more on being in the now then the past, emphasizes the states of now. Has been inspected by the Navy as a potential naval jack.
E4- New America- used by the NAS, also prominently seen in establishments, households, and events held by the NAS. The SPCA is short for "the Senate, People, and Congress of America".
A5- Alternate Colors 2
B5- Alternate "Tall Blue" Colors 1
C5- Eagle Banner- proposed flag where the eagle was meant to represent the states/Union.
D5- Pablo's Flag- proposed by Governor Senor Pablo of Coahuila. The eagle is meant to be holding a banner that reads "E Pluribus Unum".
E5- The All-American Banner- meant to represent all citizens of Canadian, Mexican, and American descent, created by the Workers League.
While there were many other proposed flag designs, these were the most popular/recognizable/interesting from a pool of over 200 flag designs.
