did you take a photo of one or did you rely on memory?
these used to be common here in sydney when i was a kid but now they're extremely rare, either because the mynahs have taken over or maybe because they've been eradicated as an agricultural pest.

I'm sad to hear they're in decline where you are. I didn't realise you got them outside of Europe. They seem to be doing well here in smaller urban places. It's kind of selfish but I'm always fond of birds which manage to thrive among humans (helps if you dont try to wipe them out, I guess!)
I have a pretty good view of them where I work from but I used a bunch of stock images to get the details right.

I know Japanese has a word for sparrow, so they must be in Asia too, although maybe not the exact same species.
