IronicArt is a digital compilation of about 20 different images, both photographic and hand drawn. This work is more of a design study then an actual emotional expression work, though I used a lot of symbolic images.
The reason I say that it is more a design study is that I used various elements of design to bring your eye where I wanted it to go! For example your eye is first drawn to the dark negative space in the bottom left hand corner, then it is drawn along the top of the tree and up through the women’s hair. Before you realize exactly that it is in fact hair your eye is drawn up to the figure swimming in the feather, which leads you up to the pen. Your eye is then drawn along the top of the page to the part of the piece where the white space is filled with the hand holding the pencil. The line and intense color of the pencil points your eye back to the girls hair, and at that point you realize that is in fact two people kissing. Then your brain starts to absorb more of the details that are hidden inside of the design. This all happens in a fraction of a second and most people don’t even realize it!
The title stems from the irony I found in the contrast of the beautiful and fearful images that I used. The two people kissing, the butterfly’s the girl in the dress, the rose, and beautiful text are all offset by; the spider, slug, bee, dead tree’s, scary text (kiss), and various other grungy textures. Whether this image is more beautiful or fearful is up for the viewer to decide, and I believe that what you see in this tells a lot about what kind of person they are.
