Is this based off of a real tank?

SixthCircle In reply to Strongman20 [2019-11-25 13:17:49 +0000 UTC]

It's not, no - it's based off certain elements of real tanks, though (the very low turret profile stems from a Wegmann proposal for a future Leopard 2 turret, the hyperbar engine and compressed air gun extraction system are lifted from the Leclerc, etc).

Fundamentally I'm not actually all that happy with this, and look forward to drawing up a new MBT reasonably soon!

Rekiin [2014-06-07 11:56:20 +0000 UTC]

Now I'm not an expert, but wouldn't a flat turret flat like that mean your tank would have absolutely zero gun depression or elevation?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SixthCircle In reply to Rekiin [2014-06-07 13:35:49 +0000 UTC]

Nah - at least, not on this vehicle. Normal gun turrets have a gun depression that's restricted by the turret roof, true, but in this case there's actually a flap along the top of the turret that essentially moves that part of the roof alongside the gun. Cue somewhat more complex mechanical construction (and the need for more powerful electrical motors driving the gun depression), but also the ability to have a fairly significant depressive range alongside a low profile turret.

Wegmann (of KMW fame) came up with a concept along those lines for a Europowerpack driven Leopard 2 back in the '90s, if you can dig that up.

Rekiin In reply to SixthCircle [2014-06-07 14:51:03 +0000 UTC]

Ah darn. I have a massive bulging monster of a turret on the tank I'm making right now. Out of curiousity, what's with the little tower thing just in front of the remote weapons station?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SixthCircle In reply to Rekiin [2014-06-08 01:33:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, I mean, the vast majority of conventional turrets don't have Wegmann flaps.

That's the commander's independent sight.

Not 100% sure just yet, hashing out the complicated technical bits right now.

What I *do* know - 128mm L/55 Solid Propellant Smoothbore, 74t or so with a 10 cylinder opposing piston VG diesel hyperbar to keep it trundling along, with a hydractive suspension. I *want* the transmission to be hydromechanical, but I need to go over the charts again to see if I can make something that can adequately handle the 70~t weight range while still feeding enough power to the tracks.
