Dude... the Worm is the Dev U's Spider-Man (Wat being the Thing) in terms of team-ups, crossovers and popularity.

It's probably no mistake that I have you and Tom's guys as half of the Fantastic Four.

Much appreciated, my friend. I should have done that Avengers vs Avengers annual cover, so I'd have had room for Armor Man.

He's a cool character to draw! You can draw him serious or funny without going OOC too much

LegacyHeroComics [2012-05-20 06:22:13 +0000 UTC]

Great cover choice for an homage. I like how you handled it.
(and I'm not just saying that because you included Mythic!)

I've noticed that Kirby didn't draw Spider-Man very often.
There's something about Spidey's costume and build that doesn't lend itself to Kirby's style.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skaramine In reply to LegacyHeroComics [2012-05-20 16:56:24 +0000 UTC]

Which is strange, because he didn't mind drawing Johnny at the same size as Spidey.

Plus, in that era, he was tending towards simpler costumes yet.

LegacyHeroComics In reply to Skaramine [2012-05-20 17:51:24 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to see the original pencils for this cover.
I have the impression that the Spidey inks were altered to better reflect the "in-house" look of their flagship character.
If you compare Spidey to Thor... One looks like Kirby, the other is closer to how Romita draws Spidey.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skaramine In reply to LegacyHeroComics [2012-05-20 18:38:52 +0000 UTC]

I'm thinking that too, now that I look closer - and I've been spending all of yesterday looking at that.

Bonus cheetoh on this pic - the pencils were on four separate pages of 8.5 x 11 paper, which makes it almost approximately the same size as a legitimate comic board. 27 x 11...

LegacyHeroComics In reply to Skaramine [2012-05-20 20:04:58 +0000 UTC]

Cool.
Have wanted to work at that scale for a long time.
The logistics of my small 8 1/2 X 11 scanner makes that a bit difficult. The best I can hope for is 11X17 what a difference 10 more inches would make. (insert sexual innuendo here)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skaramine In reply to LegacyHeroComics [2012-05-20 20:12:19 +0000 UTC]

This is the second time working multiple images into one work - the first being "Enter the Kitteh."

And, even that had a strong Kirby vibe - at least the "slave kitten."

I think I'm onto something.

What is proper Comic board scale? Ah, 11x17.

I don't have a scanner that can handle that either, but I DO have some 11x17 copy paper.

LegacyHeroComics In reply to Skaramine [2012-05-20 21:31:40 +0000 UTC]

Will be interesting to see where it takes you.

Kirby preferred working on the big boards. When you see the amount of detail he packed into his splash pages, you can see why.
He just let it all out those pages. There's a degree of fearlessness in his work, that I admire. He just went for it!
Did what worked best visually.
Anatomy, Physics, Grace, and Refinement be damned.
And the crazy thing is...it worked!!

My girlfriend was almost offended that I gave Batman buck teeth, but that's just the Blue Beaver. Just a bunch of creations by friends, based off a cover by the greatest comics artist there ever has been.

Thank you, Lynda.

The Worm is no Mr.Fantastic but he is smart enough to think quick on his feet and adapt to tougher situations.

Plus - it's Wormm and the Blue Beaver. Lord Wormm and Plummy NATURALLY go together - they're like Deniro and Paccino of the DevU.
