just one question: How do you make things like this have a transparent background?

If you use Paint Tool Sai, you need to save it as a .psd and transfer it into Photoshop or Gimp
If you're already using Photoshop or Gimp, make sure the white background is removed (so you can see the grey checkerboard pattern) and the drawing is colored in, and then save it as a .png file.
