#7: Al Simmons "Spawn" - Spawn (series)

While I've not read Spawn, it's pretty much the quintessential hero with a dark origin that I'm going for with this countdown. Spawn's another thing that's always interested me, if only out of sheer curiosity. Much like with MediEvil it was something I wasn't allowed to see as a kid especially in the 90's when the whole concept of a character being made into the general of Hell's army was likened unto witchcraft within my Christian home and a pretentious older brother that saw it all as awful shit because it wasn't the type of comics he deemed worthy, it was just something else that passed me by but every time we went to a comic shop I'd sneak a peek at them.

Even if I haven't read any of the comic, Spawn is such an icon at this moment that I don't feel too bad including him. His look is stylish and cool and while he does straddle the line of anti-hero/villain at times, his open defiance of Hell and fighting it's minions while subsequently being one himself makes him perfect for this year... I also just really liked John Leguizamo as the Violator, so I wanted some kind of a shout out even if it wasn't the Clown himself. Sue me!
