Description
#10: Gutierrez - Freakazoid
Ah, Freakazoid. Such a fantastic, sadly short-lived show. Similar to MST3K, Freakazoid was one of my regulars in my younger days. My brother and cousin and I would watch it religiously and would quote it til even today. It wasn't until more recently that I became reacquainted with it but getting it on DVD and while I hate to sound like one of those nostalgia blinded people... they really don't make shows like that anymore. Literally. They don't. They stopped making the show years ago!
Gutierrez was one of those great villains that succeeded in being both intimidating and extremely funny. I always wish when I first saw the show I knew something about Star Trek, or at least Wrath of Khan, because so much of his jokes went over my head, though seeing it now, makes him even funnier. Although it was only shown once, his Freakazoid form was actually pretty cool looking, I have to admit and worked well enough to be the "evil twin" arch-type.
Probably not entirely deserving of a spot in the Top 10, if we're going by overall notoriety but... screw it! Getting to hear Ricardo Montalban say "weenie" as dramatically as he can muster is worth enough to put him in the winning spot!

Freakazoid... A show too good for its time. We need more shows like that on TV. Freakazoid, Earthworm Jim, the Tick...
Closest we got is Deadpool, but we need MORE. MOAR.

Yeah, but Deadpool overdoes it. It's no fun to have a character who's unstoppably badass AND a know-it-all wisecracker. There are no flaws and they just feel like some obnoxious Mary Sue.
What made the other characters fun was that we knew they couldn't be stopped, but there were still limitations in some way. The Tick is a "nigh-destructible" human wrecking ball, but there's a sweet and sincere dopiness to him that you really care about the big lug even though you know he's never really in any danger. Freakazoid is a self-aware lunatic, but there's enough mockery of himself through his own comments or just the fact that his superpowers are stupid and/or ill-defined that he never feels like an overpowered pain in the butt.
Quirky heroes are all about balance. And that's my sermon for the day.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly! Deadpool's too OP, and that takes away from his humor.
