Description
Sonic the Hedgehog turned 29 today and to commemorate that I'm going to share a little project I started on a whim that just grew into a life of it's own. Drawing characters in my own style is nothing I'm unfamiliar with. I've done it with the Super Mario Bros, Banjo-Kazooie, One Piece, the list goes on. In many cases it's just a case of artistic freedom and making things more enjoyable for myself when drawing, others however are born from having drawn the subject matter so many times that the thought of having to draw the same, tired designs again makes me want to stab my eyes out... figuratively speaking.
Now, I by no means am saying that I can no longer stand drawing Sonic the Hedgehog characters, nor am I saying that I'm improving on these character designs. (though I will admit that most of the cast are essentially the same model but with differing primary colors and animal aesthetics that barely match the creature their based after) This is simply a case of becoming bored with drawing the same thing so often that my mind wandered off and questioned "What would it look like if I was to design these characters?" and I did just that. It started small and gradually grew and grew until it became my own little head canon. Nothing special and nothing I'm going to defend to my dying breath. Just a fun little thing I like to explore here and there and maybe someone else will enjoy it.
The way I view Sonic, or at least this version of him, is sort of a "not the hero we want, but the one we got" scenario. Sure, his heart's generally in the right place but his head's up his own ass. There was a time when he was a humble, somewhat awkward and slightly out of shape nerd but after quashing the intentions of a certain egg-shaped villain fame and vanity got to his head and he quickly fell into the frat boy, dude-bro, douche bag variety who thinks he's way cooler then he actually is! Despite this, he is genuine and can easily lead and inspire others if only due to his sheer, undying tenacity and uncanny ability to deny reality and substitute his own. Is this some sort of power born from being an incarnation of chaos... or is it just dumb luck? We may never know.
As a final side note, I like to think he's the one who essentially names every character in the series; by that I mean ludicrous names like "Knuckles the Echidna" or "Big the Cat." There's nothing you can tell me that will make me believe that anyone willingly named their children something like that, even in a world as silly as Sonic's, not when we have characters with real names like "Miles" or "Amy" while an absurd one like "Rouge" is stated to just be a code name. I just see Sonic as the type of guy to give everyone nicknames, regardless if they're nothing more then insensitively bringing attention to that person's deformity. This could be because his own name is something really embarrassing and stupid but he'd rather die than admit that~!
( TLDR: Listen to this - www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoWwBc… this is basically how I picture Sonic. )
