#9: Sweet Tooth(the car) - Twisted Metal

Twisted Metal was one of those franchises that I feel could only exist as a product of the 90's, sure, it lived on til 2012 (presently) but honestly, has anyone really cared about the series since Twisted Metal: Black? It was just that wonderful 90's formula of irreverent mayhem and dark humor that just doesn't catch on these days and believe me, I hate harping on about "being a 90's kid", honestly all of these descriptions so far have made me sound so old but digging into one's childhood does have a way of making one nostalgic. I really didn't intend to be so this year, but this countdown has turned out to be way more introspective then I ever intended and though I kind of sound like an old fart in doing so, I'm okay with it. This one's been an oddly emotional one for me, even if the subject matter is silly. Oh the places you will go...

Uh, where was I? Sorry. Right! Twisted Metal! So what can I say about Twisted Metal? Back when it was in it's hay day, I loved this series and to date it is the only situation ever in which I have liked Rob Zombie but that's probably just because his music is nice for when you're taking your brain out and just enjoying polygonal vehicular mayhem. While I liked the games, I always had a sweet spot for ole' Sweet Tooth (no pun intended) and how could you not? The games forced him right into your face with every cover, hell were it not for this twisted clown, the game series would have fallen into total obscurity! A demolition derby where the victor is granted any wish he desires, with a manic twist like some kind of proverbial monkey's paw? Interesting... but you add in a killer clown who drives a battle ready ice cream truck and has a flaming head? Now we got ourselves a winner. I can truly say, this was one of my favorite games... that is, until Twisted Metal: Black came around.

Now what do I have against Twisted Metal: Black? Well, while I can give it credit on doing a great job of story telling I simply cannot forgive it for what it did to the character of Sweet Tooth. He was the series' icon, so changing him from what he was into what I dub as "Bubba the Clown" was just a terrible move; Sweet Tooth defined the series, because while it was dark and twisted, it was also fun and not taking itself too seriously. You knew immediately from the cover that you were going to have fun. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for making the series more dark, but removing that playful nature from Sweet Tooth effectively removed all playfulness from the series. It sucked the life out of it and I believe it shows, especially as they have stayed with that new design for Sweet Tooth ever since. That was when the series officially died for me and if I'm to be frank, had that not happened, I would have placed Sweet Tooth way higher on this list, but as is, it just serves as a sad reminder of a series that tried to act way cooler then it really was and just came off as looking embarrassing in doing so...

But hey, at least Sweet Tooth the car has always looked bad ass. So that's why this shout out is going to the car! Fuck that general, personality devoid slasher trope Needles! (also, see if you can spot the references)
