That it is. The only thing Shadow ever loved gets taken away from him. No wonder he wanted revenge. It seems the other characters don't understand this, mostly the heroes (Sonic, Tails, etc.)

Yeah! And it also explain´s Shadow´s personality. And well, the other chars don´t really know about this do they? Sonic, for example. That´s what I never liked about the games: They keep the backgroundstory of the chars behind Shadow´s past a secret (they never even mentioned Maria´s age or her illness in the games!) and then kill the whole past thing off like that. >=[

Apparently Maria had a kind of illness that would have made her paralyzed, turning her into a vegetable, or so I hear. That sound like it'd suck, but Shadow, I guess, was created so Gerald could find a cure. This is all speculation that I've read in various online opinions and such.

Actually, Maria (who´s a 12 years old by the way, weird they never mentioned that in the cartoon or the games) did have an illness, that would´ve killed her if she would´ve left the ARK. It´s called NIDS, which is AIDS, just called differently, maybe to make it more kid-friendly... Gerald created Shadow trying to find a cure, but he didn´t do it in time.
