Description
THE EDITS HAVE BEEN DOUBLED.So yeah, I thought things were better, then they changed the episode. In the wise words of James May. "Oh cock." I'm sure you know the story so I won't take up anymore space here.
Save Derpy. [link]
EDIT: Things *seem* to be settling down slightly since I've posted this. Welovefine have gone back to using the name "Derpy" and the episode, untouched form when it aired, is sitting on the MLP website right now. Still no word on iTunes, but it's probably a safer bet that the episode is not there for another reason.
Check out: [link]
So everything below here is a little outdated.
check out [link] and [link]
[link] for a petition to keep the name Derpy
* Basically, some people complained about how Derpy was portrayed, and Hasbro and Welovefine are doing a back flip of sorts on the whole Derpy thing. Now I was going to leave it there, and assume that it was just the aforementioned 'some people' that complained that got Derpy pulled. But after a quick snoop around their DeviantArt and Tumbler pages, I'm not entirely sure. Yes they may of expressed concern over how Derpy was shown, but it does seem like a bit of an overreaction by Hasbro and Welovefine in relation to a few complaints.
'copyright issues over the name Derpy' is the reason that the 'some people' give for the Derpy disappearance. (Which, lets be honest, does seem very reasonable. Imagine how much money Hasbro would make if they made a Derpy toy.)
I've not linked to the 'some people's pages, as they kinda have a lot of angry messages and the such being shot at them, and I don't wont to add fuel to an already raging fire. There is no direct evidence that they were the catalyst that caused all this. They complained / made a note about Derpy; Hasbro and Welovefine reacted. Quite possible that it is just a coincidence.
Anyway...

Cheers!

Poor Derpy. It's stuff like this that makes me worried about a story I'm doing. One of the kids is hyper and ditzy...will he be called "offensive" too? Where do you draw the line between a genuinely affectionate, if goofy, portrayal and "too many are upset by this?"

I made a dragon character called Diza, or Dizzy, and she's REALLY hyper to where people tease her, but aren't trying to be mean. Will people call that offensive?

Sometimes, people want something, and when they get it, they don't like it. Take the whole save Derpy drama, for instance.

Derpy doesn't strike me as retarded at all. She just seems a bit of a ditzy sorta character. I like how the fans were able to more or less name a character and how so many of us were so pleased when our support for the show and character recognized. It's sad to see in this world we live in that so many people complain about so many things that are hardly as offensive or suggestive as they make them out to be. I think that if people were to just accept the fact that Derpy is just a cartoon character and not a stereotype or political statement, then there would be so much less disquiet and protest to her character.

I don't watch this show, but this is what I have to say.
Derpy Hooves is not just a character, it was background color at first. The fans noticed that and gave it a name "Derpy Hooves." This character became catchy to the creators and animators of the show so they started to add it in. It soon became such a big thing over the long months of the show being on air that they soon added it as it's own character.
What does this mean? It means the fans CREATED a character on the show! This is such a fantastic thing for a franchise! It means that both the creators and fans care about something.
It being ruined by such a small excuse for what seems like nothing more than a buzzkill (because there is already a controversial character on the show).
Well the name Derpy applying to the idea of being "retarded" is pretty bad for the kids (this IS a kids show btw). Derpy's name and eyes have been changed, but the very fact that the creators had that attention to the fans should be something to appreciate. However, I am HIGHLY against censorship in the belief that kids are dumb information absorbing robots (you'd be surprised, we only need to teach them to have an opinion). Derpy should be the character to have the example of accepting someone with "a few flaws."
Regardless Derpy Hooves/Ditsy Doo is an example of true love for what you do both fans and creators alike.

But seriously, are you sure Derpy has a mental disorder? It could be a Blonde Stereotype that went to far. That's how I see it, just so there isn't a reason to get rid of Derpy. I'm blonde and I don't care.

This is beautiful!
I'm not a brony, in that I'm a married lady in her early 30s, but I grew up loving MLP's. In recent years, I started re-collecting. And then I sat down to watch the new show, and was AMAZED.
I like Derpy, but if this had happened back in the '80s (like, say, they actually put a symbol on Amber or something), it wouldn't have had nearly as much of a blow-up. Then again, the Internet wasn't the same animal back then as it is today. (It was exclusive to the military, I think, if it existed at all.)
IMO, if they were going to cannonize her, they should have stuck with it no matter what. I know there are folks out there who are waaaay too easily offended because of a cartoon. It's the same type of folks who pressured ABC to ban certain Bugs Bunny cartoons back in the '90s because they were too "violent". >__<
Overly sensitive people, you need to learn to RELAX and realize that not everything you take as offensive is, in actuality, offensive. Sit down, realize Derpy's just a background character in a cartoon, and stop freaking the crap out.

I really don't get it :/ Some people found derpy offensive, and not in just the name. As in, a mentally disabled pony, people found that offensive. Hasbro had to do something about it, and thats that. There is no "save derpy" Really, its not gonna happen guys. If anyone is being selfish, its you guys... seriously, what if a friend of yours was mentally disabled and they found this offensive? I'm not saying all of them did, just saying a few did, but that was enough for hasbro to change it :/

ShadowBlade52 In reply to Jadepool [2012-02-29 02:19:53 +0000 UTC]
When was it ever mentioned that she was mentally disabled? She just seemed like a clumsy carefree character to me. There have been more characters that are closer to mentally disabled in other cartoons and nothing was said about them and nothing has happened to them.

Jadepool In reply to ShadowBlade52 [2012-02-29 06:28:44 +0000 UTC]
It wasn't but it obviously offended someone, and maybe these other shows aren't s popular as MLP? How should I know? I'm just pointing out, some people were offended for these reason.
π: 0 β©: 0
Liz-H-Alexander In reply to Jadepool [2012-02-27 14:55:52 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, it's rarely the actual disabled community that's bothered by things like this, but rather other, non-disabled folk who decide to be offended FOR them.
I think folks were applying way, way too much symbolism to a My Little Pony character. I'm clumsy myself, and can relate to Derpy in a lot of ways. That's why I like her so much.
The first season, when she accidentally dropped an anvil on Twilight...well, that was what sealed FiM for me. Not since the old Looney Tunes (and I mean the originals no earlier than the 1960s) have I enjoyed that kind of humor in a cartoon!
Speaking of which, it's because of folks over-reacting to things like this that has made awesome things like Looney Tunes, and now Derpy, be down-graded to....whatever it is they're doing to cartoons now. :/ (That is, save for Adult Swim cartoons like American Dad and Robot Chicken (and yes, I know RC is more still animation and less cartoon).)
