The theory that I have is that a toy becomes active when a human interacts with them (read: plays with them) and will be given the personality of whatever the human provides them. In most situations this would likely lead to a toy acting as its respective character. Which is why Buzz in the first Toy Story is so stubbornly certain that he's the real Buzz Lightyear, because his first human-interactions treated him just as such.

I would have went further with this theory if I were still continuing my tumblr blog this picture's based on. I just lost motivation to do so.

Interesting idea, althought this kinda leaves the question how Rex ended up like he is in the Movie, given that his toy is this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0GJzC…

My personal theory for such a scenario, when I thought making one of those toy comics on my own, was that a toy becomes active once it is unpacked.  Developing a personality similar to the base character is quite common, but not neccesary. It's most likely when it is the only toy based on a specific character.

I should mention that my theory only suggests that a toy's first human interaction would result in it's default personality, but can obviously change or grow as the toy experiences more. I'm sure Rex must have had an interesting interaction when he was first activated.

Your theory is decent, but it brings up the question of what is considered "unpacked". In TS2 we first find "Other Buzz" set up in a display, and there's no real certainty that he was really ever packaged in the same manner as the other Buzz's. In the same scene we also see several Barbie dolls out of their boxes throwing a pool party: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX4ABe… Either they were alive before being unpacked, or I'd hate to be one of the associates at Al's Toy Barn constantly re-packing unboxed Barbies.

Ofcourse, chcaracter development is still possible. So if Rex started out as a the DR T.rex, he must really have been traumatized to end like that.

On the subject of Buzz, I think that works more towards my theory, given that they all tend to think they are the real deal. Also, wasn't Buzz reset at some point?

As foir Barbie, I figure that once activated, putting the figure back into the Box won't deactivate it again. They probably managa to somehow get back into their packages themselves.

It should however be meant that while my planned Toycomic has the whole living toy thing, they were not meant to be like in Toy Story, but rather their own thing. Characters are also aware that they are in a toy comic.
