Description
So, I finally got around to watching Encanto, and honestly, it's a great movie. I'll give my honest opinion and I'll include spoilers, so be aware before reading any further!
I love the message of the movie and I can relate to certain aspects of it, also the fact that Disney, despite mostly focusing on the monetary aspects when making movies, didn't make a half-baked one. The songs were catchy and the animation along with the bright and saturated colours were marvelous, I love how the camera angle and certain shots were applied. One thing I'm fascinated by is the variety of characters in this movie, seeing more diversified characters and to be able to relate to them is amazing, this movie was the closest to my culture and ethnicity, and that was certainly a surprise for me, a good one, mind you. And seeing all sorts of people also being able to connect both emotionally, but share similar traits to the characters as well, was definitely fun!
What I felt some type of way about:
The main conflict is well established early on, and even though you might come to think there might be a twist villain, turns out there isn't, the main toxicity comes from the family, more so from Alma, and even though I get where she was coming from, she would still act so obnoxious and uptight with all family members, as a result, everyone would constantly work under pressure, and also, poor Mirabel was treated like she didn't belong just because she didn't have a gift. Abuela flat out gaslighted the girl when she brought up the magic was fading, and even later on blamed the girl for said magic going away. And don't even get me started with Bruno, who despite having a gift was treated unfairly because he didn't see anything "positive" in his future visions. Dude was living alone, silently suffering and missing the family that didn't even check up on him after his sudden departure, that was caused by them in the first place.
Of course, in old-fashioned Disney movies all conflicts and misunderstandings solve themselves after a quick talk, usually including a sad song in the background, a hug and a couple of tears, which is usually not how people solve problems. Giving that long term trauma can be caused by the way someone was treated and usually takes longer to heal from, but since this is just a kid's movie and we have to keep the pace and conflicts limited to a certain amount of time, I'm aware that's expected.
At this point I would rather like to have a main villain than making one of the main characters look like one. The execution was done really well, regardless.
Overall, a good movie, would recommend 8/10
I haven't chosen a name yet, I thought about Ines, Luz or Maria.
