Shylock barely had time to get his bearings before he was discovered. He had just enough time to realize three things.

First, his body was different. Where he once felt magic pool behind his eyes, now he felt a distinct hollowness. He felt physically smaller, his muscles less tones and his ears, of all things, heavy and furry where they were not before. Some of the markings that had once been present on his paws were gone, though he could not remember what said markings were for the life of him. Lastly, his mouth felt off, as if it were connected to his nose in a way that it wasn't before.

Second, he had no idea where he was. The roaring of demons had stopped and gave way to the rustle of wildlife and the drone of silence. The grass had felt sharp and prickly beneath his feet mere minutes ago. Now it felt soft and mossy, sinking beneath his paws. The world around him in general held a cool tint that it hadn't before. He couldn't tell if it was day or night.

Third, his son was nowhere to be found. And he was terrified for his life.

That was how two strangers, one bearing arms, found him. The emotions of what happened to Shylock culminated in a rush of panic, sorrow, anger, every negative feeling he had felt before his life was churning in his stomach, and he barked at the strangers as they approached. Don't come near.

"Easy, we ain't gonna hurt you." The taller, darker creature said. Shylock was surprised that he could understand him, but his guard was still up. "Are you lost? Can you tell me your name?"

Shylock knew logically that he should attempt to communicate, perhaps the creature would understand the limited wing sign he knew, but he was frozen in place, his lips curled in a snarl.

"You're not from around here, are you?" The creature spoke, "If I stay over here, can I tell you some things?"

No movement. No yes. No no.

So the creature sat and began to speak.
