Description
It had been a couple days since that walk where Whistle had acted so oddly. Matcha had let him be, if only because he had acted so weird around her, like he didn’t want to be near her. It hurt her heart more than she expected, but surely the stump hadn’t started hating her so suddenly?
With that thought in mind, Matcha finally set off to find Whistle, noting that the floorboards were getting colder. The first winter snow was soon, or at least she’d heard so from some of the other adults.
She noticed a cracked door and heard nervous Mancake cooing. Thinking it might be Springtime, she poked her head into the room.
Whistle was huddled on the food, Springtime leering over him in that motherly way. He wasn’t crying, but he was definitely sad, and Matcha couldn’t stand to see such a look on his face. She carefully approached, making sure that her footsteps were loud enough for him to head. “Whistle? Are you alright? I haven’t seen you all that much lately.”
Whistle perked up when he heard her voice before frowning again. “’M okay, nothing’s wrong.”
“You can’t get me with that.” Matcha approached and kneeled over him, “Aren’t you cold? It’s supposed to snow tonight and the floor will be cold.”
“Uh-uh.” Whistle looked away, “I’m okay. I don’t wanna be difficult.”
“Difficult?” Matcha tilted her head, “Why is keeping you warm difficult? I can just get you a blanket.”
“Because I’m difficult.” Whistle finally huffed, stamping a clawed hand on the birch planks that made up the floor. “I’m not right. I make everyone’s lives harder, all because I don’t see right. I don’t even know how to fix it! They’re my eyes, and I don’t even know how to fix them! And nobody can be around me because of it!”
“Whistle.” Matcha put a paw on his shoulder to silence him, “Where did you hear all of this? Who told you that?”
Whistle couldn’t look her in the face, even if he could see where her colors turned from greens to white sclera. “My old mom. The lady who dropped me off here.”
Oh. That made a devastating amount of sense. “Whistle, you’re not difficult or wrong, not even close.”
“I’m not-“
“No, listen for a moment, alright?” Matcha pulled him into her belly fluff, “You are different, yes. You see things differently from other people. But how long have you seen that way?”
“I dunno.” Whistle shrugged, “Forever?”
“Yes, forever.” Matcha said with a smile, “And you’ve done quite well for yourself, haven’t you? You make your own way, and what do you do when your way hasn’t worked?”
“…Ask for help?”
“That you do.” Matcha nodded, “And even if you ask for help, do you really think that it’s a bother to us? Because it isn’t.”
“It’s not?”
“Of course not.” Matcha said, “You deserve to live your life happily, even if you have to do so a little differently. You’re just as important as we are, and it really is easy to offer some help to someone you love. You can do as much as you can, and we’ll be here when you need something extra.”
Whistle was quiet for a moment before he sniffled. “D-Do you really want to be around me?”
“Of course I do.” Matcha says with a degree of finality, “I care about you a whole lot, you know. You’re my Whistle.”
Matcha hadn’t realized what she said until the stump’s eyes widened. “Your Whistle? Like how Moomy Leutogi says ‘my Skippy’?”
“I believe so.” Matcha said, “Only if you’re okay with it, of course-“
She was cut off by Whistle’s hug, him burying himself into her fur. “You mean it?”
Matcha blinked before she felt her eyes sting. She pulled her Whistle into a hug. “Of course I mean it.”
They stayed like that for a while, Springtime joining them in their little cuddle, before the white flurries outside the window caught Matcha’s eye. “Oh, Whistle, aren’t you cold? It’s starting to snow.”
“You’re really warm, Matcha.” Whistle said, sleepy and unmoving, “I don’t feel cold at all.”
It was then that Matcha noticed her magic glands, lit and red and radiating a gentle heat. She realized that she didn’t feel cold either.
She smiled and got back to her cuddle.
