Description

The evening was always a busy time for Matcha. Little ones always wanted to stay up too late, making Moomy and Bucket run around and tell them that they needed to go to bed now. Matcha always tried to explain that if they stayed up too late, they would be too tired to play when it was light out. This seemed to do the trick, for the most part.

Little little ones, they wanted stories, songs. If Moomy or Bucket looked too busy, Matcha would take up the reins, telling tales of pirates and princesses and cloud-walkers, whatever she could conjure up in the moment. Sometimes these little little ones would ask for her over Moomy, so they could hear the next part of the tale that she had purposefully left on a cliffhanger. She felt a little bad when this happened, but Moomy always gave her a wink and a nudge so she could get on with her work.

Then there were stumps who were her age, just a bit older. They didn’t usually need any stories or songs. What they needed were listeners, hugs, and friends. Matcha tried to be that for anyone and everyone she happened to meet in the dark, even if she herself was sleepy. Grateful smiles and tight hugs were her usual reward, and that was always worth an extra yawn or two.

Tonight, she heard the quiet sniffling of Gaia, a stump she knew on and off. She definitely knew her to be shy, a nervous thing who felt out of place in a crowd. Matcha herself was an extrovert, she adored being around people. However, that didn’t mean that she couldn’t sympathize for her age-mate.

“Gaia?” Matcha approached carefully, greeting her with a smile and a whisper so she didn’t spook the stump any more than was necessary. She still got a jump out of the other stump despite her caution, but luckily, she was recognized quickly.

“O-Oh, hi Matcha…” Gaia spoke softly, her voice a hoarse whisper. She hadn’t been crying too long, had she? “Sorry, am I in your way?”

“No, no, not at all!” Matcha’s stalks twitched happily as she laid down next to Gaia, “You look like you need a friend is all. Are you alright? Do you want to talk about it?”

              “U-Um…” Gaia shuffled her paws, “N-Not really…”

“That’s alright, nobody needs to talk all the time. Not even me!” Matcha tried to use the words that would make Gaia feel better, not worse. It took practice, she hoped she was getting better at it, “I can just stay with you until you feel better enough to go to bed. Is that okay?”

Gaia watched her for a moment before nodding and resting her chin between her paws again. Matcha carefully looped a foreleg around Gaia’s back and, when the other stump didn’t tense or shy away, she began to sing quietly. Her smile never left her face, because why should it? She was helping someone feel better, or, at least, she hoped she was.

She stayed that way as long as Gaia needed. Bedtime could wait for a friend.
