The thing is the film never stated no animals got hurt. It says they were handled with the utmost care, which is different. 30 cats did not die during the film.. 27 were used in place of Milo. The director was a zoologist, which doesn't necessarily make him an animal lover but one who studies animals. I saw some of the behind the scenes footage and the one that concerned me the most was with the black bear and pug. No matter which way I look at it, its hard for me to see how its not potentially animal abuse which makes me sad on multiple levels. Firstly, I really love the style of the film that was made. Secondly, it would be absolutely horrible to know that animal abuse was warranted to make the film. I'm stuck in this cross-section of doubts and I really want this movie to be pure, but I don't know how to deny how certain scenes could be warranted outside of the animals being there because they got their on their own. The only excuse for certain scenes is if the film was made without ANY human interference with nature.

Awww! Adorable!
I love this movie. It's so sad what they put the animals through during the making of the original film though. Just the same, I can't stop loving this movie. It's a nostalgic childhood fave and soooooo cute!

Fun fact: In the making of this film, 30 dogs and cats died.

No... 27 cats were used in place of Milo. They all didn't die, but its possible some of them did. Whether it was related to the film production or not is another question.

The Japanese version is much more depressing. They play sad music during this part, have the cat meow like crazy, and then after the waterfall a sad poem is written on screen! Luckily the Japanese behind the scenes showed they carefully monitored the animals and made sure they didn't get hurt

... Yeah, I just can't help but feel terrible whenever I see this film, just because of all of the animal abuse that went into filming it.
but this is a great drawing!

If it makes you feel better, none of the claims were proven true and several Japanese Humane Societies attached their names to the production.

Yeah, actually, the humane societies attached their names to the film without actually being involved in the project. Also, whether or not the claims were proven, the cut footage is ... icky.

The American Humane Societies didn't.
Apparently all the animals in the movie were raised together by the director. I'll probably look into this more later.
