Description This was ment as an experiment to proove that black colored pencil can equal graphite. I think I succeded 75%. Still a bit too grainy for my taste .... but I love that work. I like using black CP insted of graphite cause I hate that silverish reflection that graphite produces. In advanced stages of the graphite work I have to constantly aim the right angle to look what I have done. Does anybody know any cure for that phenomena. On the other side CPs reflection is minimal athough it doesnt smudges as good as graphite.

Colored pencil on a bit less than B3 paper

How did you do the detailed skin like that...? Is there a special technique how to shade?

Graphite viewed behind glass reduced that silverfish glare quite considerably..

I would say you succeeded in your experiment! The detail in the skin and on the reflection is meticulous!

amazing work, ive often thought about trying black colored pencil, never seen it used too often but this makes me wanna give it a go

Amazing! Every detail is so sharp and clear! All that was done with just black colored pencil?

nice...I really like this picture. I like the idea of the reflection from the glasses. I really like how unique this idea was.

the right angle you say hmmm....i don't see a cure really..it's all up to you

and this is a stunning result
you did great, considering it's a black pencil too
and now i want n try something like this too~!
*hates the silvery reflection a bit too*

Amazing detail! I love the reflections and you did a fantastic job of blending and layering the cp.

The best solution for avoiding that graphite glare is changing the angle of your light source rather than your head. If you have an "arm" lamp those are the easiest to relocate. The sharper the angle of the light, the less glare you will have. Make sure to cast it so that you're not going to have your own shadow getting in the way. Otherwise having light shining straight on will make that glare, there's no escaping it.

Black colored pencil isn't bad for details, but for bulk areas it makes it very easy to see against graphite because it doesn't blend at all, losing a lot of control you have over the medium vs. graphite you can darken, thin, and blend with the rest.

I particularly like the upper lip and frames of the glasses, nice rendering.

thank you for such an extensive explanation. Yes I know that, but if the piece is somewhat bigger; B3 or more, when I work on details I still catch the glare quite often from the parts that catch the angle and that prevents me from overlooking the "bigger picture". But it is not only the glare, I do not like that typical grayness of graphite originals .... if only it could be real black like it is when scanned. Lately I am investigating scratchboarding and am definitely pleased with such precision work with inkish outcome .... but it is damn slow.

Fantastic job!

I hate that silver glare from graphite too. If you can find it, try nero (sometimes called negro pencil) from Cretacolor. I have to order mine online, but it's worth it! They are oil based pencils that blend just as nicely as graphite - a little harder to erase, however, you get a great range of values from them. I order mine from here: [link]

Ah I love it! I do agree with you on the shininess of graphite..but it just blends so smooth! Colored pencil is a pain in the ass for me sometimes..I'm trying to work on it though.

This is awesome. I can actually see things in the reflections. A lot of people don't actually take the time to make it so you can see things in the reflections you know.

I've been told that building layers with hard pencils can give you enough darks and less sheen...
but I haven't tried that.

I like the tones you achieved with the black pencil ... have always thought about doing a serious portrait with one but never have - i dont think there is any real cure for the horrid shine of graphite ... its just a part of its compositional elements ... i have reduced the effects of it to an extent by doing many different crosshatching layers opposite from one another but it will always be there somewhat - i really like the Sanford Ebony pencils too .. they almost feel like a cross between graphite and very compressed charcoal - im trying a portrait exclusivly with them right now to see how it looks - other than that ive been using alot of charcoal this year to relieve the "shine" problem and speed up the dark layer process ... you get no shine with charcoal but very fine details can be compromised with the control issue *

skillman In reply to dizzykid [2007-09-29 00:30:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much .... yes there is allways something missing eather detail control or reflections or else. As more as I think about it it seames to me that I will trie with combination of black CP, black airbrushing and maybe even the digital intervention (and drawing on print)

If you use pencils darker than 6B they no longer have that silver-ish shine to them. Fixative will also reduce the shine to an extent.

Novastar2486 In reply to skillman [2007-09-21 01:09:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah you cant really work them as well as regular graphite. Have you tried powdered graphite? I know you can get some extremely dark, if not black tones without any shine to them.

Outstanding!

As for reducing the shine of graphite - Matte Fixative ([link] ) is supposed to eliminate the shine completely, but for my last project the fixative messed up part of my drawing, but that may have been from overspraying.
